INDIANAPOLIS - In their concerted effort to climb from 7th place in the ECHL's Western Conference Central Division standings, the Indy Fuel gained a hard-earned single point in a 3-2 OTSO outcome against their principal arch-rivals, the Fort Wayne Komets Saturday night at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum. In the process, the Fuel garnered 3 of a possible 4-points in the two-games' home stand series with the K's as they climbed into a share of 6th place with idle Wichita.
Indy surged into a 2-0 advantage in the opening period on goals from Josh Shalla (27) and Nick Bligh (9) with the latter strike stroked on the power play. It marked the 8th time this season that Shalla has delivered the game's FG and the 5th time against the Fort Wayners. All-Star left wing Alex Wideman, for a second consecutive night, authored 2-assists for the hometown team.
The Komets shaved their deficit in half midway through the second stanza when rookie center Mike Cazzola blazed his 23rd goal of the season and his 8th in the last 6-games against Indy.
The Fuel preserved their slight 1-goal advantage nearly to the finish line when they were interrupted by a Jamie Schaafsma goal at the 19:26 mark of the third period, equalizing the affair at 2-2. It was the third time in the series that the Komets had struck with a late goal with the extra attacker following the lifting of goaltender Pat Nagle.
After a scoreless overtime session, the Komets claimed the bonus point when they outscored the Fuel, 2-1 in the OTSO. Wideman accounted for the Fuel's lone thrust while Trevor Cheek and Schaafsma OTSO/GWG converted for the K's.
Fort Wayne outshot the Fuel, 40-29 as Eric Levine was divine in the Indy goal, brushing aside 38-shots. The Fuel power play was 1-4 and 3-11 in the set while the Komets were 0-3 and 1-8 for the pair of games.
As for Shalla, his first period goal was his 10th in 8-games against the Komets this season. Indy is now 4(1-1-2) for early March. For the season, they are 4(1-3) in the OTSO.
The Fuel conclude their 3-games in 3-days home stand Sunday in a 3:05 matinee clash against 4-time champion Allen on FAMILY FUN DAY at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum.
