Game Recap: Wings Fall Victim to Offensive Outburst from Walleye

KALAMAZOO, MI- The Toledo Walleye bounced back after last night's loss to the Kalamazoo Wings with an offensive outburst that led to a 6-1 victory on Saturday night at Wings Event Center.

The Walleye earned the first goal of the night while operating on their first power play effort of the game. Setting up traffic in front of Wings' goalie Joel Martin, the Walleye found the back of the goal after Nolan Zajac's long shot was re-directed by Evan Rankin, sending it skipping off the ice and under Martin's pads.

Just over two minutes into the second period, the Walleye doubled their lead after a wacky bounce in front of the goal. J.P. LaFontaine's shot caromed off a body in front of the goal and sailed over the head of Martin and past the line.

Later on in the frame, the Walleye padded their lead by crashing the net and tapping home a loose puck. A try from Zach Nastasiuk was initially stopped by Martin, but Alden Hirschfeld couldn't be contained, and he was able to sweep the un-marked puck into the net for his 22nd goal of the season.

Leading by three and early in the third period, Tylor Spink cushioned the Toledo lead to four goals after being set up by a tape-to-tape backdoor feed from Evan Rankin. Simon Denis added a power play tally five minuntes later with a laser of a one-timer that was served up by Shane Berschbach, and it capped off five unanswered goals for the Walleye.

Kalamazoo struck for their lone goal of the night with five minutes remaining in regulation. Eric Kattelus had the faceoff pulled directly back to him, and he was able to slide the puck along for Lane Scheidl, who dished it in front for Peter Schneider to deposit into the back of the goal from point blank range.

Toledo responded quickly to Schneider's goal and finished off their attack for the night as Dane Walters caught a stretch feed behind the defense and beat Martin with a forehand-to-backhand deke that found the top corner of the goal. The goal was the sixth of the night for the Walleye, as they coasted to a 6-1 victory.

Notes: Kalamazoo ended the regular season series against Toledo with a 4-5-0-1 record...The Wings outshot the Walleye 37-35... Schneider has 11 points in his last eight games...Kalamazoo went 0/2 on the power play and 3/5 on the penalty kill...The six goals allowed tied a season high for the Wings.
