November 20, 2002 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manchester Monarchs News Release
The Manchester Monarchs ended their three-game winless streak with a 6-1 thrashing of their arch rivals, the Lowell Lock Monsters, before a crowd of 6,543 at the Verizon Wireless Arena Wednesday. The Monarchs improved to 10-3-2-0 with the win.
Monarchs defenseman Tomas Zizka netted two power play goals and notched an assist for a three point night while center Steve Kelly's two goals, including the game-winner and a short-handed tally, helped lead Manchester over Lowell.
Zizka started the scoring in the first with a power play goal just 3:35 into the game. Pavel Rosa came out of the corner with the puck and passed it to Zizka who was planted on the right side of the net. Zizka lifted the puck into the top left corner to get the Monarchs on the board. Center Yanick Lehoux was also credited with an assist.
Kelly's one-timer found the back of the net less than six minutes later to give the Monarchs a 2-0 lead. Defenseman Joe Corvo brought the puck into the zone and down the left side before dishing the puck back to Kelly at the left circle. Kelly then ripped a one-timer past Lowell goaltender Randy Petruk.
Zizka's second effort tally with the man-advantage at 12:48 made it 3-0 Monarchs. Rosa started the play with a pass from the left corner right through the crease to a waiting Zizka. Zizka's first attempt was stopped by Petruk, but he gathered his rebound and lifted it over Petruk's shoulder for the goal. Lehoux was awarded his second assist of the night on the play.
Kelly's short-handed goal at 15:36 gave Manchester a commanding 4-0 lead. Kelly skated the puck into the zone with Monarchs defenseman Joe Rullier in the box on a five minute elbowing major. He held off his defender, brought the puck to his forehand and buried it topshelf for the tally.
Lowell's only goal came less than a minute later on the power play. Tommy Westlund prevailed in a flurry in front of the net, slipping a shot past Manchester netminder Cristobal Huet.
After a scoreless second period, the Monarchs added two more goals to finish off the Lock Monsters. Chris Schmidt scored at 8:44 with assists from Corvo and Zizka. Right winger Pavel Rosa redirected a pass from rookie Jared Aulin to lock things up at 6-1 with less than four minutes to play. Defenseman Chris Aldous also assisted on the play.
Huet finished with 26 saves while Petruk stopped 40 of 46 shots for Lowell.
