Saint John Flames News Release

Saint John, NB – The Saint John Flames, in partnership with McDonald's Restaurants and the School Boards of Districts 6, 8 and 10, today announced a new initiative aimed at promoting good attendance habits among elementary and middle school students.

The "School – Don't Miss It!" program will allow each elementary and middle school in Districts 6, 8, and 10 to select one male and one female student who have maintained outstanding school attendance or shown dramatic improvement in overall attendance. Each nominated student will receive a recognition package consisting of two tickets to a Flames home game in March 2002, two food certificates from McDonald's Restaurants and a certificate of achievement signed by the Flames Martin Sonnenberg. Each participating school will set their own selection criteria for the program.

Participating schools will also receive a supply of posters featuring Martin Sonnenberg promoting school attendance.

"We are pleased to add this program to our growing partnership with the school boards of Southern New Brunswick," stated Flames Chief Operating Officer and General Manager Stew MacDonald. "We are committed to enhancing our community off the ice and I thank both McDonald's and Martin Sonnenberg for making this program possible.

Sonnenberg was a natural spokesperson for the "School – Don't Miss It!" program.

"School attendance was always very important to me," he remarked. "In fact, I am very proud to say that from grades 1 through 12, I was absent due to illness for a total of only two days.

"I hope this program will further reinforce the importance of school attendance, not just for academic success, but also for personal development.

Sonnenberg also expects to make personal visits to participating schools over the course of the program.

The Flames are in action this week visiting the Manitoba Moose Friday, November 22 at 9:30 PM and Saturday, November 23 at 9:30 PM. All Flames broadcasts can be heard live on 96.1 NewSong FM in Saint John or on the web at www.newsongfm.com. All times listed are Saint John time.

Tickets for all Flames November, December and January home games are currently available at the Harbour Station Box Office, the Imperial Theatre Box Office, selected Irving locations (Main Street West, Champlain Heights, Millidgeville, Marr Road, Hampton and Grand Bay), and Charge-by-Phone at 657-1234 or 1-800-267-2800.

The 2002-03 season marks the Saint John Flames' tenth as a member of the AHL and as the primary development organization of the National Hockey League's Calgary Flames.
