LAST WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS

Vs. Portland (1/11): Center Aaron Gavey and right wing Pierre Parenteau scored shootout goals to lift the Portland Pirates over the Manchester Monarchs 3-2 in a shootout at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Wednesday night. Monarchs center Connor James and right wing Petr Kanko scored in regulation and left wing Noah Clarke scored the lone goal in the shootout against Pirates goaltender Nathan Martsters. Left wing Curtis Glencross and defenseman Maxim Kondratiev were able to sneak the puck past Monarchs goaltender Jason LaBarbera in regulation. LaBarbera took the shootout loss stopping 33 shots. Marsters earned the victory with 34 saves. Manchester and Portland went 0-for-6 on the power play.

Vs. Lowell (1/13): Three power play goals lifted the Lowell Lock Monsters over the Manchester Monarchs, 5-3, at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Friday night. Center Connor James scored shorthanded, defenseman Mark Ardelan collected a power play goal and right wing Brad Smyth scored at even strength for the Monarchs, but the Lock Monsters' three power play goals in the second period by center Krys Kolanos, left wing Paul Healey and left wing Cody McLeod were too much for Manchester to handle. Defensemen Danny Richmond and Johnny Boychuk also scored for Lowell to finish off the Monarchs. Manchester goaltender Jason LaBarbera made 38 saves in the loss. Lock Monsters goaltender Vitaly Kolesnik earned the win stopping 31 shots. Manchester went 1-for-10 on the power play. Lowell was 3-for-9 with the man advantage.

At Albany (1/14): Goaltender Barry Brust recorded his second shutout of the season and right wing Lauri Tukonen collected his first goal since November 27 as the Manchester Monarchs blanked the Albany River Rats, 1-0, at the Pepsi Arena on Saturday night. Brust stopped all 20 shots he faced from Albany in the win. River Rats goaltender Frank Doyle made 34 saves. Manchester went 1-for-6 on the power play. Albany was 0-for-5 with the man advantage.

Vs. Providence (1/15): Right wing Brad Smyth and center Yanick Lehoux each scored two goals to lift the Manchester Monarchs over the Providence Bruins 4-3 at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Sunday evening. Providence came to within one goal with tallies from right wing Pat Leahy, right wing Jason MacDonald and center Ben Guite. Monarchs goaltender Jason LaBarbera held off the Bruins by making 27 saves for his first AHL win of the season. Bruins goaltender Jordan Sigalet stopped 17 shots before being replace by Mike Brown for the third period, who stopped all five shots he faced. Manchester went 1-for-4 on the power play. Providence was 2-for-6 with the man advantage.

1/15/06: The Los Angeles Kings (NHL) returned goaltender Adam Hauser and center Matt Ryan on loan to the Manchester Monarchs (AHL).
1/13/06: The Manchester Monarchs (AHL) released defenseman Chris Barr and forward Mike Kompon from their professional tryout agreements.
1/13/06: The Los Angeles Kings (NHL) returned defenseman Richard Petiot on loan to the Manchester Monarchs (AHL).
1/12/06: The Los Angeles Kings (NHL) recalled goaltender Adam Hauser and defenseman Richard Petiot from the Manchester Monarchs (AHL).
1/11/06: The Los Angeles Kings (NHL) loaned goaltender Jason LaBarbera on a conditioning assignment to the Manchester Monarchs (AHL).
1/10/06: The Los Angeles Kings (NHL) returned center Connor James, left wing Noah Clarke, right wing Petr Kanko and defenseman Richard Petiot on loan to the Manchester Monarchs (AHL).

MONARCHS NEWS & NOTES

The Manchester Monarchs (24-11-1-4, 53 points) are in second place in the Atlantic Division. The Portland Pirates (26-9-3-2, 57 points) are four points ahead of the Monarchs to lead the Atlantic Division.

The club has sent 17 out of their 40 games into overtime and/or a shootout this season, winning 12 out of those 17 games.

Manchester is 7-4 in shootouts and 5-1 in overtime games this season.

The Monarchs are undefeated at home on Sundays (4-0-0-0).

At home, the Monarchs are undefeated in regulation when they are leading after the second period (6-0-0-0) and in one-goal games (9-0-1-2).

Manchester is undefeated (8-0-0-0) when they score five or more goals.

With special teams, the Monarchs power play is ranked 24th in the League, capitalizing 31 times on 243 opportunities with the man advantage. Ranked 16th in penalty killing, Manchester has given up 45 goals on 263 opportunities.

Manchester has the lowest number of penalty minutes in the AHL with 673 penalty minutes.

The Monarchs lead the AHL in attendance halfway through the season, 20 home games, averaging 8,502 fans per game.

Right wing Brad Smyth (20-23=43) leads the team with 43 points, 20 goals, 23 assists and a plus/minus rating of plus-17.

The 6-foot, 200-pound native of Ottawa, Ontario, Smyth's 43 points are tied for seventh among the AHL's top scorers.

Smyth is ranked third in the AHL with a plus/minus of plus-17.

Smyth is currently on a three-game point streak, collecting four points (3-1=4) in the Monarchs last three games.

Left wing Jeff Tambellini is second in team scoring for the Monarchs with 38 points (18-20=38).

A former University of Michigan Wolverine, Tambellini is ranked second in the AHL among rookie scorers (38 points), fourth among rookie goal scorers (18) and is tied for sixth among rookies in assists (20).

Tambellini is ranked fourth among AHL rookies and tied for ninth in the AHL with a plus/minus of plus-15.

Right wing Petr Kanko is tied for second place in the AHL with three shorthanded goals on the season.

At 5-foot-10, 190-pounds and a native of Pribram, Czech Republic, Kanko appeared in his 100th professional game on Friday, January 13, when the Monarchs fell to the Lowell Lock Monsters, 5-3. Kanko has 36 points (13-23=36) and 141 penalty minutes in 102 games with the Monarchs and the Los Angeles Kings.

Goaltender Adam Hauser is ranked seventh among AHL goaltenders with 14 wins on the season.

Hauser made his NHL debut with in the Kings 10-1 loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday, January 14. The 6-foot-2, 194-pound native of Bovey, Minnesota, was put in net after goaltender Mathieu Garon let in four goals on 10 shots in the first 10-minutes of the game. Hauser faced 24 shots through two and a half periods of work and allowed six goals against.

Defenseman Mark Ardelan appeared in his 100th professional game on Saturday, January 14, when the Monarchs prevailed over the Albany River Rats, 1-0. Ardelan is a 5-foot-11, 200-pound native of Avonlea, Saskatchewan, and he has 63 points (21-42=63) and 52 penalty minutes in 101 games with the Monarchs, the Portland Pirates (AHL) and the South Carolina Stingrays (ECHL).

Ardelan is currently on a three-game point streak, collecting one goal and two assists in the Monarchs last three games.

Monarchs PA Announcer Sean Sullivan appeared in his 200th consecutive game, including playoffs and preseason, on Sunday, January 15.
