Manchester Monarchs News Release

WORCESTER, MA – The Manchester Monarchs and the Worcester IceCats entered action at the Worcester Centrum Centre on Wednesday night tied for third place in the Atlantic Division. Sixty-five minutes later, the story was the same as the Monarchs and the IceCats skated to a 4-4 draw before an announced crowd of 2,238. With the tie, the Monarchs (24-20-4-3, 55 points) extended their unbeaten streak to two games (1-0-1-0). The Worcester IceCats (22-18-10-1, 55 points), who share the league lead with 10 ties this season, are winless in their last three games (0-2-1-0). Through seven games, the Monarchs are 2-2-3-0 against the IceCats in their 10-game season series. By earning a point, each team pulled to within one point of the idle Providence Bruins for second place in the division.

The game finished in a deadlock thanks to goaltenders Adam Hauser and Brent Johnson. Hauser, who collected his third tie against the IceCats this season, stopped two bids to end the game by defenseman Jame Pollock in the first minute of overtime. The Monarchs were short-handed at the time because of defenseman Bryan Muir's holding penalty, assessed with 37 seconds remaining in regulation. Johnson later bolted a good 30 feet outside of the crease to make a game-saving stop on right wing Pavel Rosa, who had just entered the zone on a breakaway with 2:10 remaining on the O.T. clock. Hauser, who has an overall record of 11-10-4, finished with 38 saves. Johnson, who is 1-1-2 on the season, stopped 24 shots.

Each team connected for a power play goal in the opening period. Rosa gave the Monarchs a 1-0 lead with his team-leading 21st goal at 5:08. Center Yanick Lehoux and Muir each assisted on the five-on-three power play goal, with Lehoux winning the face-off and Muir sliding the puck to Rosa, who took two strides toward the net before blasting the puck over Johnson's glove.

The IceCats tied the game with defenseman Tom Koivisto's slap shot from the point at 9:20. Left wing Sergei Varlamov and rookie left wing Peter Sejna assisted on Koivisto's first of the season, with Varlamov feeding Koivisto for the one-timer from the top of the right circle.

The Monarchs were on the receiving end of bad news later in the period when center Steve Kelly was awkwardly checked into the boards. Kelly, who appeared to suffer an upper body injury, left the game with five minutes remaining in the period. He did not return.

The Monarchs moved out to a 3-2 lead through two periods, thanks to goals from Rosa and left wing Chris Schmidt. Rosa made it 2-1 with a quick wrist shot from the left circle at 1:39. Left wing Noah Clarke and defenseman Randy Perry assisted on Rosa's second of the game and 22nd of the season. The goal was also Rosa's 50th as a Monarch. Only one other player in team history has more goals than Rosa. Former left wing Eric Healey collected a team-record 66 goals for the Monarchs from 2001-03.

The IceCats tied the game later in the period with center Johnny Pohl's ninth goal, scored on the power play at 9:20. Koivisto and Pollock assisted, with Pohl scoring short side on Hauser.

Schmidt, who entered Wednesday's action with six points (2-4=6) in four games against the IceCats this season, added to his total by jamming a rebound past Johnson at 13:16. Right wing George Parros also got a piece of the puck before Schmidt stuffed it home. He and Muir shared assists on Schmidt's fourth goal this season.

A defensive breakdown led to the IceCats' third goal, scored by defenseman Aaron MacKenzie at 7:49 of the third period. Pohl slipped by the Monarchs' defense on a partial breakaway before firing from the right circle. Hauser got a piece of the shot, but was unable to control the rebound. Sejna next pounced on the loose puck near the left circle and shuffled it to MacKenzie, who slipped his backhander through the slot by Hauser.

Defenseman Joe Rullier's goal 1:28 later gave the Monarchs their fourth lead of the game, but rookie right wing Mike Glumac tied the game at 4-4 with his close range backhander, scored at 12:16. Center Michael Cammalleri assisted on Rullier's third goal this season with his face-off win in the Worcester zone. Pollack and rookie center Jay McClement assisted on Glumac's 15th of the year.

The Monarchs next head to Albany's Pepsi Arena to play the Albany River Rats at 4 p.m. on Saturday, February 14. After Saturday's game, the Monarchs will bus to Providence and finish the weekend with a game at the Dunkin' Donuts Center against the Providence Bruins on Sunday, February 15. Face-off against the Bruins is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. The Monarchs next home game is slated for Monday, February 23 against the Binghamton Senators.
