Hoover, AL - A.J. Pollock collected a pair of hits with three RBI as the Mobile BayBears (9-4, 47-36) mangled the Birmingham Barons (7-6, 47-36), 10-2, in front of 1,983 fans Tuesday night at Regions Park. The game was delayed 43 minutes due to inclement weather.
Birmingham snatched a 2-0 lead in the first inning after back-to-back singles by Alden Carrithers and recently added Jose Martinez. A walk to Christian Marrero loaded the bases for Josh Phegley, who lined a two-run single to left field that plated Carrithers and Martinez.
The BayBears responded in the top of the second inning with six runs. With the bases loaded, a throwing error by Barons third baseman Jake Oester allowed two runs to score and extend the inning. Pollock also added a two-run single in the inning.
Mobile added a run in the sixth inning when Ollie Linton singled up the middle, advanced to third on Adam Eaton's single to up the middle and Pollock's single to center field, 7-0.
In the eighth inning the BayBears tacked on a final three runs with a key RBI double by Goldschmidt that paced the frame.
Mobile starter Wes Roemer (6-4) earned the victory after the right-hander yielded two earned runs on 7 hits, 2 walks and 5 strikeouts in 5.0 IP. Reliever Bryan Henry (S, 2) earned the save when the righty tossed 4.0 scoreless IP with three hits and two strikeouts.
Barons starter Charlie Leesman (7-2) allowed six runs (four earned) on 6 hits, 4 walks and 2 strikeouts in 5.0 IP.
The Barons and BayBears tackle game three of the four-game series Wednesday night with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. at Regions Park. Birmingham hands the ball to right-hander Terry Doyle (3-2, 2.31) while Mobile answers with left-handed pitcher Patrick Corbin (6-5, 4.29) .
