Generals Bullpen Comes up Big in Win Over Braves

PEARL, MISS. (JULY 6, 2011) - Jackson relievers Moises Hernandez, Stephen Penney, Brian Moran and Steve Delabar combined to allow just one run on two hits in eight innings Wednesday as the Generals defeated Mississippi 4-2. The bullpen was needed because during the bottom of the second, amidst controversy Andrew Carraway hit Braves batter Ernest Mejia on an 0-1 pitch and was ejected by the home plate umpire. The Generals victory snapped a two game losing streak.

Carraway went one inning before the ejection and allowed one run on no hits. Hernandez entered in the second inning and allowed a homerun but settled down to just give up one run on two hits in 3,2 innings. Stephen Penney (4-2) was credited with the victory after pitching 1.2 innings scoreless, striking out one and walking one, not allowing a hit. Brian Moran earned a hold with 1.2 scoreless and Steve Delabar struck out one and tossed a perfect ninth to log his eighth save. Braves starter Arodys Vizcaino (2-3) took the loss, surrendering four runs on five hits in 5.1 innings. He struck out seven and walked two.

Rich Poythress extended his hitting streak to five games Tuesday by finishing 1-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. Scott Savastano and Carlos Triunfel each were 2-for-4 to lead the Generals. Cory Harrilchak had two of Mississippi's three hits, going 2-for-3 with the homer and two RBI's.

The Braves got their two runs in the bottom of the second inning. The second batter Moises Hernandez faced after replacing Carraway, Cory Harrilchak hit a 2-run homer to give Mississippi a 2-0 lead.

The Generals began to chip away at the lead by scoring a run in the top of the fifth on a single from Brandon Haveman that scored Triunfel.

The Generals big inning was in the sixth, scoring three runs. Rich Poythress, Joe Dunigan and Brandon Bantz collected RBI's in the three-run inning that put Jackson on top for good 4-2.

The Generals will look for a series split onThursday night in Pearl, MS against the Mississippi Braves. Game time is set for 7:05. RHP Erasmo Ramirez (6-5, 4.66) makes the start for the Generals against LHP Brett Oberholtzer (4-9, 4.18) for Mississippi.
