Miners Rally for Four in Ninth to Down Freedom

The Freedom lost another heartbreaker on Saturday night as Southern Illinois rallied from a 6-3 deficit entering the ninth with four runs to win 7-6 on a walk-off single by Nate Hall. Florence has lost four in a row and it was their fourth time losing after leading by three or more in the past six games.
Closer Corey Martin came on for the ninth look for his 11th save. Pinch hitter Ken Gregory led off with a single. After Boomer Blanchard struck out, Martin walked the next four consecutive hitters, walking home two in the process as the Freedom's lead was cut to one. Brandon Mathes came on in relief with the bases loaded and one out. Ryan Meade sent a fly ball to left that was dropped by Jonathan Smith to score the tying run. Nate Hall singled to right to end the game.
Ernie Banks hit a two-out, two-run homer to center in the first to put the Miners on top.
The Freedom put together a rally in the fifth inning. With one out, Drew Rundle walked, Kevin Haas singled to right and Junior Arrojo was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Gabriel Shaw came on in relief and was greeted by an RBI single by Juan Valdes to cut the deficit to 2-1. John Malloy hit an RBI fielder's choice to tie the game at two, as he beat the throw at first to continue the inning. Chris Curley walked to reload the bases and Willie Holmes hit a bases-clearing three-run double to give the Freedom a 5-2 lead.
The Miners got a run back in the seventh on a two-out RBI single by Sean Coughlin. He was thrown out at second trying to advance on the throw home.
Malloy hit an RBI single in the ninth to increase the Freedom's lead to 6-3.
Martin (2-2) suffered the loss and blown save while former Freedom reliever Ben Shivers (4-1) took the win despite allowing a run in the ninth.
Game two of the series will be Sunday night at 6:05 ET. Andy Clark, who has a 1.50 ERA in his last six starts, will take the ball for the Freedom.
