Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
CRESTWOOD, IL - The Traverse City Beach Bums got an exceptional team effort and won their biggest game of the season to date as they beat the Windy City Thunderbolts the final game of a three-game series at Standard Bank Stadium Friday night by a score of 1-0.
In a contest that had the look and feel of a playoff game, the Beach Bums won their first game in six tries against the Thunderbolts at Standard Bank Stadium.
The score remained tied until the seventh when Beach Bums first baseman Jeff Flagg was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. With one out, third baseman Jose Vargas lined an RBI-triple to right-center field to give Traverse City the 1-0 lead.
In the eighth, Windy City loaded the bases with nobody out, forcing the Beach Bums to bring in reliever Scott Mueller, who impressively worked out of the jam without allowing a run, inducing a double play to the end the inning,
Traverse City starting pitcher Matt Smith (1-4) pitched 6.2 scoreless innings in earning his first win of the season. Mueller recorded the final six outs of the game to pick up his fifteenth save of the season. Windy City starting pitcher Dustin Williams (8-4) pitched a complete game three-hitter, but allowed a single run in the seventh inning in suffering his fourth loss of the season.
With the win, the Beach Bums improve to 32-31, while Windy City falls to 35-28 on the season. The win keeps the Beach Bums to four and a half games back of the first-place Joliet Slammers in the Frontier League East Division.
The Beach Bums head to Joliet to open up a three-game series with the Slammers beginning Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. The Budweiser Pregame Show starts at 6:45 p.m. on Sunny Country 101.9 FM and streaming online through tcbeachbums.com.
