Cornbelters Use Big Inning To Defeat Grizzlies

NORMAL, IL - Normal scored five runs in the fourth inning and held on for a 6-4 win over Gateway in the series opener on Saturday night at The Corn Crib. The loss was the second in a row for the the Grizzlies.

Gateway (27-36) led 1-0 after a Landon Hernandez solo home run in the second. The homer for Hernandez was his third in four games and tenth on the season.

Normal (31-33) tied the game at one with a Tyler Keeble RBI single in the second inning.

The Grizzlies powered their way to some more runs in the third inning. After singles by Brian Harris and DJ Fitzgerald, Joe Agreste homered for the ninth time in the 2011 summer. The three RBI for Agreste gave him 12 in the last four games.

The Cornbelters took the lead with a five-run fourth inning. Normal received a two-run triple from Andrew Barbaro, an RBI single from Alvaro Ramirez and an RBI groundout from Frank Martinez.

That was all the scoring both teams would get, as both bullpens fired shutout baseball the rest of the way.

Brad Stone (0-5) got the start for the Grizzlies and gave up six runs on ten hits in four innings. Stone picked up the loss after giving up five runs in the fourth. Jordan Cudney and Nick Walters both threw two shutout innings for the Grizzlies.

Normal starter Brett Lester lasted just 2 2/3, giving up all four Grizzlies runs, but his bullpen bailed him out. Michael Click (1-1), Andy Mee and Marshall Schuler combined to throw 6 2/3 shutout innings to help give Normal the win.

Fitzgerald paced the Grizzlies offense with three hits, while Harris collected two hits.

The Grizzlies continue their three game series against the Normal Cornbelters on Sunday night. The Grizzlies send rookie left-hander Andres Caceres Jr. (1-0) to the mound in game two of the series. First pitch is set for 6:00 CT.
