Joliet Slammers News Release
(Joliet, IL) - The Traverse City Beach Bums (33-31) used two big innings to beat the Joliet Slammers (36-27) by a final score of 6-2 Friday night in front of a record crowd of 5179 fans at Silver Cross Field.
The Beach Bums got to Slammers starter Brian Fowler (4-2) in the fourth. With one out Jeff Flagg doubled. Greg Burns followed with a grounder to right field that Reid Chenworth stumbled trying to get to and it turned into a RBI double. After Fowler hit a man, Hector Bernal singled in Burns, putting runners at the corners with two in and only one out. A Chris Kay sacrifice fly put Traverse City up 3-0.
They'd score three more in the sixth as the Slammers handed them some runs. Fowler walked Burns to start the frame. One out later Bernal singled and with two outs Zack Pace came up big with a RBI single to extend the lead to 4-0. That hit chased Fowler from the game. In came Billy Petrick and at that point the game got sloppy. A passed ball scored one run and then Petrick struck out Matt Brown but on the play there was another passed ball and another run scored as Brown scampered to first. A fielder's choice ended the inning but the damage was done as the Slammers found themselves in a 6-0 hole.
The lone bright spot in the game was a couple of rookies get their first professional hits and RBI. The newest Slammer, Reid Chenworth, got his first career hit in the fifth inning as he singled to left center. He followed that up with a RBI single that drove in Sean Estand to make the score 6-2. Chenworth advanced to second on the throw home and Saint Francis alum. Brent Walters doubled him in for his first career hit and RBI.
Those were the only runs the Slammers would get though as David Deminsky (3-2) went 6 and a third innings, scattering seven hits, allowing the two runs, walking three and striking out three to get his third win of the year. Fowler picked up the loss as he went five and two thirds, giving up six runs, four earned, on eight hits. He walked two and struck out three.
With the loss the Slammers winning streak of three games was snapped. They'll look to bounce back Sunday night as Ryne Miller (0-4, 5.28 ERA) takes the mound against Scott Dunn (4-2, 1.41 ERA) of Traverse City. First pitch is at 6:05 p.m. Central Time. Fans are encouraged to arrive early as it's a "Salute to BBQ" and the Slammers are giving out an apron to the first 500 fans through the gates.
