Sanders Slam Sweeps Freedom

O'Fallon, Mo. - With River City trailing Florence by two runs in the eighth, Doug Sanders crushed a grand slam to right-center to lift the Rascals to another come-from-behind win over the Freedom, picking up the sweep by a final of 12-9.

River City (46-16) added another run in the ninth on a Chad Maddox single.

The Freedom (27-35) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first before the Rascals plated six in their half, three coming across on a homerun from Jason Patton.

Neither starter pitched well, nor did the first out of the pen as the teams were tied at seven after the third.

Florence led off the fifth with a homerun to take an 8-7 lead and added an insurance run in the top of the eighth after the Rascals were shut down for five innings.

River City batted around in the first inning and again in the ninth.

Jareck West led off with a single that was followed by a one-out walk, prompting a pitching change.

Manager Steve Brook went to his bench and called upon the rookie Matt Serna who was hit by a 0-2 pitch as the Rascals put on a double steal.

That loaded the bases for Sanders, who hit two grand slams last season with River City, both at T.R. Hughes Ballpark.

Coupled with a Southern Illinois loss, River City extends their west-division lead to nine games.

The Rascals head to Evansville to play three games in two days starting Saturday with first pitch set for 7:05 at Historic Bosse Field.
