Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL - Making his first rehab start for the Peoria Chiefs, Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Wade Miller pitched three scoreless innings while striking out three as the Chiefs fell to the Swing of the Quad Cities 4-0 Thursday night at O'Brien Field.
With the game still scoreless in the top of the fifth, the Swing finally broke through against Jesse Estrada, who came on for Miller. Luis Cotto and Shane Robinson hit back-to-back singles to lead off the frame. Quad Cities then became the first team to score when Dan Nelson ripped an RBI double to score Cotto. Robinson also tried to score on the play but was cut down at the plate on a relay by Yusuf Carter and Robinson Chirinos. However, the Swing plated two more on back-to-back doubles by Randy Roth and Colby Rasmus to make it a 3-0 ballgame.
Quad Cities added an insurance run in their half of the ninth. Jose Martinez doubled to lead off the inning and with the Chiefs' infield drawn in, scored on a pop up single by Shane Robinson to give the Swing a 4-0 advantage.
The Chiefs never really staged any scoring opportunities all game long. Mark Reed and Jesus Valdez hit consecutive singles to start the bottom of the fifth, but a Ryan Norwood flyout and a Carter double play ball erased the threat. In his three innings of work, Miller allowed three hits while walking one and striking out three. If the right-hander throws a successful side session on Saturday, he will most likely start for the Chiefs on Tuesday at Wisconsin. Jesse Estrada was draped with the loss. He pitched three innings and gave up three runs on eight hits. Roger Evenson also came in in relief. He went three innings as well and gave one run on two hits. Quad Cities starter Adam Daniels picked up the win going six shutout frames of three-hit baseball.
