Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Swing of the Quad Cities got another strong outing from the mound Thursday night as three pitchers combined for a four-hit shutout at O'Brien Field, defeating the Peoria Chiefs, 4-0. The Swing pitching staff has now tossed 22 consecutive scoreless innings dating back to before the All-Star break, including back-to-back shutouts.

Quad Cities (1-0) starts out the second half on the right note after going 34-34 in the first half, matching a season-high by racking up 15 strikeouts as a pitching staff for the first time since they did it against Cedar Rapids at John O'Donnell Stadium on May 26. Peoria (0-1) could not get anything going offensively, but have already wrapped up a playoff berth after winning the MWL-West's first-half title.

The Swing broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth as they rallied against Chiefs' reliever Jesse Estrada. Luis Cotto and Shane Robinson each singled to get the party started, but three consecutive doubles did most of the damage. Daniel Nelson smacked the first one into the gap in right center, scoring Cotto for the game's first run though Robinson was gunned down at the plate. Colby Rasmus and Randy Roth then followed with back-to-back run-scoring two-baggers, each pulling line drives off the wall in the corner to give the Swing a 3-0 lead.

Quad Cities tacked on an insurance run in the ninth. Jose Martinez sparked the rally by stretching a line drive to left field from a single into a double. After moving to third on a sacrifice bunt, Robinson lifted a flare single over the drawn-in infield to plate Martinez for the 4-0 edge. Robinson, the Cardinals' fifth-round pick earlier this month, turned in a strong showing in his pro debut with three hits, a stolen base, and an RBI.

Adam Daniels (3-6) started for Quad Cities, fanning nine in six shutout innings and allowing three hits and two walks. In his last two starts, the southpaw has punched out 19 opposing hitters while walking three without allowing an earned run in 12 innings of work.

Swing reliever Danny Borne added four strikeouts in two innings before Jonathan Mikrut fanned two in a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Rehabbing Chicago Cubs' major leaguer Wade Miller started the game for Peoria, taking the mound with a pitch count of around 40 in his first appearance since undergoing Tommy John Surgery as a member of the Boston Red Sox late in 2005. The righthander allowed three hits and no runs in three innings, striking out three and walking one while throwing 39 pitches and 26 strikes.

Estrada (4-1) suffered the loss for the Chiefs, tossing three frames but allowing five consecutive hits in the three-run fifth inning.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and coverage on Progressive Talk AM-1270 will begin at 6:45 p.m.
