Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release

FOX CITIES STADIUM -- Frank Martinez hit a third inning grand slam to lead the Kane County Cougars to a 7-3 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in the second half opener for both teams Thursday night. Jared Lansford gave up three runs over five innings to runs his record to 4-0 against Wisconsin this season.

Kane County (41-29 overall, 1-0 second half) scored twice in the second inning with two outs. Back-to-back RBI singles by Isaac Omura and Justin Sellers put the Cougars in front 2-0.

Rattler starting pitcher Jose Escalona looked like he would keep the score at 2-0 after retiring the first two batters of the third inning. But, a walk, a double, and another walk loaded the bases for Martinez. The Cougar DH lined a 1-0 pitch from Escalona just over the left field wall for a grand slam and a 6-0 Kane County lead.

The Cougars added another run on a Jeff Baisley RBI single in the top of the fourth.

Wisconsin (27-44, 0-1) got on the board with RBI singles by Luis Valbuena and Ron Garth in the bottom of the fourth. The Rattlers added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI single by Eddy Hernandez. Not only was that the last run for the Rattlers, it was also their last hit.

Lansford got an inning ending double play from the next batter and turned the game over to the bullpen. Jeff Gray worked three perfect innings and Randy Rapp pitched a perfect ninth to close out the Cougars tenth win in thirteen games over the Rattlers this season.

Game two of the series is Friday night. Marwin Vega (1-4, 7.33ERA) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers. Joe Piekarz (2-1, 2.28ERA) is set to start for the Cougars. Game time is one hour later at 8:05pm.
