Garcia named to Futures Game roster
June 22, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
St. Louis Cardinals' prospect Jaime Garcia has been selected by Major League Baseball to participate in the 2006 XM Satellite Radio All-Star Futures Game, the Swing of the Quad Cities announced Thursday. Having already been named the Cardinals' Pitcher of the Month for April and garnered Midwest League All-Star honors, this announcement becomes the third in an impressive list of accomplishments in his first professional season.
The native of Reynosa, Mexico, will be part of the 25-man roster for the World squad that will take on a United States team in a battle of top prospects as part of Major League Baseball's All-Star festivities. The two teams, whose rosters were selected by Major League Baseball in conjunction with all 30 clubs and Baseball America, will square off on July 9.
Garcia, 19, has gone 5-4 with a 2.90 ERA through the first half of the season, striking out 80 in 77.2 innings while holding opposing hitters to a .229 batting average. The southpaw was selected by the Cardinals in the 22nd round of the 2005 draft, but an arm injury delayed his professional debut until 2006. In his first month of the season Garcia held opponents to a .185 batting average while posting a 2-1 record with a 2.52 ERA to earn organizational Pitcher of the Month honors.
While Garcia was the only St. Louis Cardinals player to make the roster, he was one of three Midwest Leaguers to be selected for the game.
The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim's Nick Adenhart (Cedar Rapids), the Midwest League wins leader, will pitch for the United States team after going 9-2 with a 2.08 ERA and being named a starting pitcher in the Midwest League All-Star Game. He will be joined by the Detroit Tigers' Cameron Maybin (West Michigan), the 10th overall pick in the 2005 draft, who hit .315 with 28 RBI and nine stolen bases in 36 games despite missing time with a finger injury.
UP NEXT: The Swing of the Quad Cities will begin the second half with a two-game road series at Peoria starting Thursday, with LHP Adam Daniels (2-6, 3.90) taking the mound opposite big league RHP Wade Miller on a rehab assignment. First pitch Thursday night is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and coverage on Progressive Talk AM-1270 will begin at 6:45 p.m.
NEXT HOMESTAND: The Swing will return to John O'Donnell Stadium on Saturday and Sunday for a quick two games with the Peoria Chiefs.
