Kane County Cougars News Release
Appleton, WI - The Kane County Cougars opened the second half of the season by continuing to dominate the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, winning 7-3 Thursday night to defeat the Rattlers for the 10th time this year in 14 games. Frank Martinez delivered a grand slam in the third to break open the game, and the Cougars coasted behind the pitching trio of Jared Lansford, Jeff Gray and newcomer Randy Rapp. Isaac Omura and Justin Sellers delivered consecutive two-out, run-scoring singles in the second against Rattlers starter Jose Escalona for a 2-0 Cougars lead, and Martinez increased the cushion in the third. With Anthony Recker, Steve Kleen and Jose Pineda aboard, Martinez belted the third Cougars grand slam of the season and his first round-tripper since mid-April to make it 6-0.
Jeff Baisley singled home Nick Blasi in the fourth against Lance Beus for Kane County's final run of the night, which was proved to be plenty of offense. Lansford (6-4) allowed two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to nab his fourth win this season against the Rattlers, allowing six hits over five frames while walking one and fanning one. Gray was perfect for three innings, Rapp posted a 1-2-3 ninth in his Cougars debut after joining the team from High-A Stockton.
The Cougars (1-0) and Rattlers (0-1) continue the four-game set Friday night at 8:05 CDT, as Joe Piekarz (2-1, 2.28) faces Marwin Vega (1-4, 7.33).
