Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, OH - The Dayton Dragons (0-1, 35-36) opened up the second half of the 2006 season by falling behind 9-0 to the South Bend Silver Hawks (1-0, 34-33), only to rally to within two, but eventually lose by the final score of 10-7. Dayton brought the tying run to the plate in the 8th inning, much to the delight of 8,465 fans at Fifth Third Field, but was unable to push across the runs needed to pick up the come-from-behind victory.

South Bend started the scoring in the third inning off Dragons starter Carlos Fisher (LP, 6-4). Two singles and a walk loaded the bases for Trey Hendricks, who responded with a two-run single to left, putting the Silver Hawks ahead 2-0. Ricardo Sosa followed with a single of his own, and the lead was 3-0, and still nobody out. After Fisher issued a walk to Will Crouch, his third of the game, the right-hander was relieved in favor of left-hander Philippe Valiquette (ND). Valiquette induced a groundout from Frank Curreri, but Hendricks came in to score the game's fourth run. After a walk to Manny Ferrer, Pedro Ciriaco also hit an RBI groundout, scoring Sosa, and giving South Bend the 5-0 edge.

The Silver Hawks weren't finished as they scored four times in the fourth inning off Valiquette. Justin Upton and Bryan Byrne hit back-to-back singles, and Hendricks followed with an RBI double to make it 6-0 in favor of South Bend. Sosa then took a Valiquette offering deep over the left field fence, and the three-run home run put the Silver Hawks on top 9-0 in the fourth inning.

The Dragons began the comeback march in the 5th inning off Silver Hawks starter Anthony Cupps (WP, 5-3). With one out, Eric Eymann and Craig Tatum hit back-to-back singles, and Josh Holden followed with a walk to load the bases. Mike Griffin singled to left, scoring Eymann, and Adam Rosales followed with an RBI groundout to make it 9-2. Jay Bruce, already two-for-two on the night, ripped a pitch to left, scoring Holden, but Griffin was thrown out by left-fielder Hendricks at the plate, and the inning ended with Dayton trailing 9-3.

Dayton added two more in the seventh. Eymann singled, and advanced to second on a groundout. With two down, Griffin connected for his second RBI single of the night, and it was 9-4 in favor of the Silver Hawks. A wild pitch put Griffin at second, and after a walk to Rosales, Cupps was lifted in favor of Jake Baxter (ND). Two wild pitches later, Griffin scored the 5th run of the night for the Dragons.

Dayton crept even closer in the 8th. With one out, Bobby Mosby hammered a pitch to left-center field for his fifth home run of the season. Habelito Hernandez and Eymann followed with back-to-back doubles, and with one out in the eighth inning it was a 9-7 game. In came Kyler Newby (S, 4), and that was it for the Dragons. Newby retired five straight Dragons to preserve the victory for South Bend.

The Silver Hawks added a run in the top of the ninth off the combination of Dragons relievers Russell Haltiwanger (ND) and Damian Ursin (ND) to end the game with the 10-7 victory. Dayton pitching issued seven walks on the night, a new season high, and allowed 14 hits, tying the mark that has been recorded five times in 2006.

The Dragons and Silver Hawks lock horns again on Friday night, with a 7 p.m. first pitch. RHP Zach Ward (6-0, 2.89 ERA) will get the starting nod for Dayton, while South Bend counters with RHP Kyle Wright (4-1, 3.86 ERA). 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will broadcast the game live beginning with the Dragons Pre Game Show at 6:30 PM.
