Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA (June 22, 2006) Carlos Rosa's five-game winning streak started on May 6th at West Michigan and it was the Whitecaps (1-0, 42-26) that ended the streak with an 8-4 victory over the Burlington Bees (0-1, 35-33) tonight at Community Field. Michael Hernandez had three hits, including a double and a home run, drove in two and scored two to lead the Whitecaps to victory in the first of this four-game series to open the second half of the season.

The Whitecaps struck early and often against Rosa (6-4). In the top of the first, a two-out walk to Cameron Maybin led to two runs as Hernandez and Pedro Cotto followed with consecutive doubles. The Bees got on the board in the bottom of the first inning when Cotto dropped a line drive with two outs to allow Mario Lisson to score, but the Whitecaps came right back on a solo homer by Dusty Ryan to start the second to extend their lead back to 3-1. Hernandez added an RBI single in the third and the Whitecaps scored three runs in the fourth on four hits and two errors. The rally was capped when Brady Everett fell down chasing a fly ball off the bat of Matt Joyce. The ball hit Everett and rolled away for a double. Everett came out of the game with a separated shoulder and was replaced by Antonio Sabatini. Rosa came out after four innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on nine hits. It was his first loss since May 1st.

The Bees attempted to chip away against Whitecaps starter Erik Averill (3-3). In the bottom of the fourth inning, JP Lowen drew a two-out walk and Chris McConnell and Jeff Howell followed with singles to produce one run and make it 7-2. Ethien Santana hit a ground ball to second that Will Rhymes threw wildly to first for an error that allowed McConnell to score. It was another error that led to the Bees fourth run in the fifth. Lisson lined a one-out double off the wall in left, stole third, and scored when Ryan's throw skipped into left field. Only one of the four runs against Averill was earned through five innings and the Whitecaps bullpen shut down the Bees the rest of the way. Josh Rainwater fanned five through two scoreless innings. Ricky Steik allowed a hit and struck out the side in the eighth and Anthony Claggett matched his line in the ninth. The Whitecaps bullpen struck out eleven in the final four innings and the Bees struck out 14 times overall.

Rayner Oliveros worked three innings in relief of Rosa and allowed one run on two hits. Hernandez belted a solo homer in the seventh inning. Eliezer Garcia finished the final two innings. He walked two and struck out two.

The Bees and Whitecaps continue this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Community Field. RH Michael Penn (5-2, 2.87) will start for the Bees against RH Burke Badenhop (7-2, 3.27) for the Whitecaps. The gates open at 6:00 for a T-G-I Bud Night and the start of Ft. Madison Community Weekend. There will be fireworks after the game sponsored by J&M Displays, SEIBUS, the Scotts Company, BL Robinson, and the Ft. Madison Chamber of Commerce.
