MANCHESTER, N.H. - Melky Mesa hit his third home run of the season for the Fisher Cats, but it was a trio of home runs, including a tenth-inning grand slam by Carlos Moncrief, that lifted the Akron RubberDucks to a 7-3 win on Wednesday afternoon.

Mesa started the scoring in the back-and-forth affair, belting a home run to left-center field for a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. His third of the season was nullified when Akron's Bradley Zimmer hit his second of the series to right field to tie the game at 1-1.

In the third, New Hampshire (57-56) went back on top when Martin Medina tripled to right-center field. He scored on a sac fly by Christian Lopes to put New Hampshire back on top, 2-1. That lead was short-lived, however, when Zimmer homered again against Taylor Cole to even it up at 2-2.

It stayed that way until the seventh when Cole walked Zimmer with one out. Nellie Rodriguez followed with a double off the left field wall to put Akron (63-54) on top, 3-2. Cole finished the inning, leaving after allowing three runs over seven innings.

Cole was on the hook until the Fisher Cats tied it in the eight. Medina started the rally with a single before leaving for pinch-runner Shane Opitz. Opitz took second on a sac bunt by Lopes, then he advanced to third on a dropped third strike while Jorge Flores was batting. Dwight Smith, Jr., followed with a single to left field to plate Opitz and tie the game once more at 3-3.

Cole took a no-decision as did Akron starter Shawn Morimando. Morimando allowed two runs over seven, striking out eight while giving up just three hits.

The game went to extras when the Ducks sunk Blake McFarland (L; 2-3) and the Fisher Cats. They loaded the bases with on a single, a walk, a hit batter, and a botched stolen base. With two outs, Moncrief blasted a 2-0 pitch onto the access road behind right field to put the RUbberDucks on top for good, 7-3.

The Fisher Cats now need a win in the finale on Thursday night to avoid a sweep and to snap what is now a four-game losing streak. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. for AAA Night presented by AAA of Northern New England. The first 1,000 fans receive a free Fisher Cats pennant, and then all fans can enjoy a spectacular Atlas Fireworks show after the game. Tickets are available at www.nhfishercats.com, by calling 603-641-2005, and by visiting the stadium box office.

The Fisher Cats are expected to start righty Conner Greene for his Double-A debut. Akron goes with righty Mike Clevinger. Tom Gauthier has the radio call beginning at 6:45 p.m. on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network and www.nhfishercats.com.
