New Britain Rock Cats News Release

Shane Carle scattered seven hits and didn't walk a batter, pitching the Rock Cats to a 5-0 win over the Trenton Thunder in the first game of a double-header Wednesday night, before 4,432 fans at New Britain Stadium. The victory snapped the Rock Cats four-game losing streak. Trenton, the Yankees affiliate, won the second game 4-1.

Carle notched his 13th victory of the season (13-6) and became the first Rock Cats pitcher in 14 years to win more than 12 games in a season. Juan Rincon won 14 games in 2001. It was also his second seven-inning shutout this year. His first came in his first victory on April 12 at New Hampshire.

"Shane was great. He really had good command of his fastball. He put it where he needed to put it. He was in charge basically throughout the game and a great job in finishing it up," said Rock Cats manager Darin Everson.

New Britain scored the only run it needed in the second inning, when Will Swanner knocked in Pat Valaika from second base with a single to center. Joey Wong, Jan Vasquez and Noel Cuevas each had two hits to pace New Britain's 10-hit attack against losing pitcher Jaron Long, the son of New York Mets hitting instructor Kevin Long.

Zach Osborne also had a single and engineered a safety squeeze bunt and a suicide squeeze bunt.

"We executed well with our bunts, both by the same guy. The safety and the suicide in the same game by the same guy is great stuff," Everson added.

Trenton scored two runs in the first inning of the second game and never looked back in pounding out 12 hits. David Dahl accounted for the lone Rock Cats run with a lead-off home run in the bottom of the first. Mike Tauchman added two hits.

The Rock Cats wrap up their three-game series against Trenton Thursday night at New Britain Stadium. Game time is 7:05 and highly-touted pitching prospect Jeff Hoffman will be making the start for New Britain.
