Moncrief Blasts RubberDucks over New Hampshire

Akron's Carlos Moncrief belted a grand slam with two outs in the top of the 10th inning Wednesday afternoon, leading the RubberDucks to a thrilling, 7-3 victory over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.

Turning Point

For the second straight day a grand slam propelled the RubberDucks to a victory over the Fisher Cats. On Wednesday, it was Moncrief who came through with a timely blast. With the score tied, 3-3, in the 10th inning, Ronny Rodriguez singled, Bryson Myles walked and Eric Stamets was hit by a pitch. Moncrief then faced Cats reliever Blake McFarland (2-3) with two outs and the bases loaded. After working a 2-0 count, Moncrief sent a deep drive to right field that cleared the 12-foot fence for a go-ahead grand slam and a 7-3, Akron lead. It was Moncrief's second hit of the game and second homer of the year for the Ducks.

Mound Presence

Akron starter Shawn Morimando worked seven innings and allowed just two run on three hits, but had to settle for a no-decision when the Fisher Cats scored a run off Josh Martin to tie the game, 3-3, in the bottom of the eighth. Morimando walked two and fanned eight batters, and lowered his ERA to 2.98. Martin (7-1) limited the damage to one run in the eighth and then worked a scoreless ninth to pick up the win. Enosil Tejeda finished up with a scoreless 10th inning, his sixth straight scoreless outing.

Duck Tales

Bradley Zimmer crushed a pair of solo home runs for the RubberDucks. His line-drive to right in the second inning tied the game, 1-1, and his towering drive off the scoreboard in right-center field in the fourth tied the game, 2-2. He has three homers in the series, and six for the Ducks overall. Nellie Rodriguez, who smacked a grand slam in the first inning of Tuesday's game, drilled an RBI double in the seventh to give Akron a 3-2 lead. Yandy Diaz was 0-5, which snapped his seven-game hitting streak.

The RubberDucks (63-54) have won six straight games and improved to a season-high, nine games over the .500-mark...Akron has hit five homers in the series...New Hampshire right-hander Taylor Cole threw well, going seven innings and allowing three runs...Akron is now 8-10 in extra-inning games...The RubberDucks have gone five straight games without committing an error...Time of game: 2:36...Attendance: 5,371.
