Last Time Out: The Memphis Redbirds closed out the season series against the Nashville Sounds (Triple-A affiliate, Milwaukee Brewers) with a 6-3 win on Sunday night at First Horizon Park. Early on, the game remained close, as Memphis and Nashville each scored once in the first, followed by a lone run from the Redbirds in the third to take a 2-1 lead. Then came the fourth, which brought an offensive explosion for the Redbirds. Memphis plated four runs on five hits in the frame, highlighted by a two-run single from Conner Capel and an RBI single from Brendan Donovan. Given all the run support, Matthew Liberatore tossed a quality outing for the 'Birds, allowing three runs in seven innings on just five hits. From there, the bullpen shut the door on the Sounds. Seth Elledge threw a scoreless eighth and Connor Jones hurled a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his fifth save of the season.
Memphis Starter: Zack Thompson will make his 21st appearance and 18th start of the season for the Redbirds this evening. Thompson struggled in his last start against Nashville, allowing four runs and four walks, lasting just 4.1 innings. He also struggled at Gwinnett on September 2nd, allowing four runs and five walks in just 2.2 innings. Prior to his two recent speed bumps, Thompson had been in a groove, allowing three earned runs or fewer in five of six starts. The 23-year-old has had three appearances against Louisville this season, allowing five earned runs in 14.2 innings with 11 strikeouts. He dominated in his last start against Louisville, tossing six scoreless innings at the Bats on July 23rd with just one walk and five strikeouts.
Louisville Starter: Reiver Sanmartin makes his 24th appearance and 16th start in Minor League Baseball this season. Between four appearances (three starts) with Double-A Chattanooga and 19 appearances (12 starts) with Louisville, the 25-year-old has posted an ERA of 2.99 in 90.1 IP with 101 strikeouts and just 23 walks. Sanmartin has pitched three times against Memphis this season, allowing two earned runs in 6.2 innings with six strikeouts. His lone start against Memphis came on July 21st at AutoZone Park, when the lefthander allowed three hits and one run in 4.0 innings with three strikeouts and one walks.
Welcome to Memphis: Nick Plummer reached base two more times in Sunday night's game against Nashville. In 16 games since his promotion from Double-A Springfield, Plummer has reached in 33 of his 67 plate appearances, good for a .493 on-base percentage.
Hot Stretch for Kramer: Kramer Robertson has been on fire over the last 13 games. Robertson has multiple hits in six of those contests, going 19-49 (BA of .388) with a home run, five RBI, ten runs, four doubles, a triple and three stolen bases. Robertson had an 11-game hitting streak and a 19-game on-base streak snapped on Thursday night, both the longest for any Redbirds player this season.
Brendan's Bringing It: Brendan Donovan had one heck of a week in Nashville last week. He went 9-19 (BA of .474) at the plate with eight runs scored, two home runs and eight runs driven in. Donovan was named the Triple-A East Player of the Week after his outstanding performance.
Good to be Gorman: Nolan Gorman is the midst of a season-long seven-game hitting streak. He's smacked two home runs and driving in seven runs during that time.
