Lancaster Stormers News Release
Gilberto Mejia lifted a three-run homer, and John Halama carried a shutout into the eighth inning as the Lancaster Barnstormers knocked off the Liberty-leading Camden Riversharks, 10-4, in front of 7,531 Saturday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
Lancaster remains 1 ½ games behind York in the Freedom Division.
The Barnstormers onslaught against starter Federico Baez began immediately. J.C. Holt, playing in his final game as a professional, lined a single into center and moved up when Mejia smashed a single into right. Tommy Everidge walked to load the bases, and Matt Watson produced a run with a sacrifice fly to right. Baez, pitching on three days rest, struck out Aaron Herr, but Brandon Jones ripped a single to right, driving Mejia home with the second run before being thrown out at second base.
Everidge's bloop hit down the right field line scored Mejia in the third for a 3-0 lead, and the Barnstormers blew the game open in the fourth.
Baez hit Iggy Suarez with a pitch, and Lydon yanked a single into right. Matt Tupman pulled a single down the right field line to bring Suarez across for a 4-0 lead. Holt struck out, but Mejia reached the top of the picnic tents for his fourth homer of the year and a 7-0 cushion.
Lancaster added three more runs in the seventh, one on a bases loaded walk to Holt on his final plate appearances.
Halama got out of a tight spot in the first, coaxing a double play out of Pedro Feliz with runners at the corners and one out. He sailed into the eighth on a six-hitter with no walks and got the first two outs on ground balls. Feliz broke up the shutout bid with a homer into the screen in right center.
Camden would tack on three more runs in the ninth, two on the first Atlantic League homer in 314 at bats for reserve catcher Shea Harris.
The two clubs meet again Sunday at 6:00 PM at Clipper Magazine Stadium. Matt Wright (2-7) gets the assignment for the Barnstormers against right-hander Josh Towers (4-5). The game will be aired on Fox Sports Radio, 1490, WLPA and streamed live on sportsjuice.com and ibnsports.com.
