York Revolution News Release
The York Revolution scored four times in the bottom of the eighth inning to come from behind and beat the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 5-3 on Saturday night at Sovereign Bank Stadium in front of 6,072 fans, the Revs' second largest home crowd of the season, in the opening game of a nine-game homestand. The Revs will go for a fourth consecutive win on Sunday afternoon at 5 p.m. in York.
Down 2-1 with just four hits through the first seven innings, the Revs used four hits and took advantage of a costly Southern Maryland error for four unearned runs in the eighth to nab their 23rd comeback victory of the season and their league-leading fifth in the final two innings.
Chris Walker (3-for-4) ignited the rally with a one-out single, stole second base, and moved to third on a Ramon Castro single to left field off reliever Steve Palazzolo. Lefty Jason Waddell entered to face Jose Herrera and issued a walk to load the bases. Closer Jim Ed Warden was then brought in and induced a ground ball to third from James Shanks, but catcher Christian Lopez dropped the throw at the plate allowing Walker to slide across with the tying run on the error. The Revs then missed a chance to take the lead when Chris Nowak lined an apparent single in front of leftfielder Ben Harrison but Castro had to tag at third before the ball landed and was unable to beat Harrison's perfect throw at the plate for the second out. Vince Harrison followed with a two-run single up the middle on the very next pitch, however, giving York a 4-2 lead. Eric Eymann tacked on an insurance run with an RBI single to right.
Michael Nix allowed an RBI double to Kody Kirkland in the top of the ninth but recorded the final three outs for his 11th save.
Geoff Geary (2-1) earned the win in relief with a perfect eighth inning.
Revs starter Chris Cody was outstanding in the no-decision, matching season-highs with seven innings and nine strikeouts (both in starts against Southern Maryland), allowing just two runs on four hits while walking only one.
His only two runs allowed came on a two-out single to right by Joe Jiannetti in the fourth giving Southern Maryland a 2-1 lead at the time.
Blue Crabs starter Brian Slocum was denied a chance at the win despite tossing a gem of his own, allowing just an unearned run on four hits in seven innings. Harrison's RBI groundout in the bottom of the second inning accounted for York's lone run in the first seven innings.
Waddell (3-7) suffered the loss for Southern Maryland, one of three relievers to allow runs in the eighth inning.
