Lancaster Stormers News Release
In a game that mirrored Wednesday evening's, Ray Navarrete drove home the deciding tally as the Long Island Ducks dropped the Barnstormers, 8-7, at Bethpage Ballpark Friday night.
The loss knocked Lancaster one and one-half games behind York in the Freedom Division.
Following a 93-minute rain delay, the Barnstormers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second on a two-run single to right by Ozzie Chavez. Long Island countered with two outs in the bottom of the inning as Matt Padgett and Tom Pennino cracked back-to-back homers off J.D. Durbin (5-2).
The two-out runs continued through the night for the Ducks. In the third, Long Island took its first lead as John Rodriguez singled to right, plating Kraig Binnick for a 3-2 edge. Rodriguez took second on a wild pitch and came home on a single to left by Lew Ford.
In the fourth, Dan Lyons grounded a two-out double inside the third base bag and went to third on a wild pitch. Binick's single to left scored him as the Ducks went up, 5-2. Binick grabbed his second steal of the night and rode home on Navarrete's single to left.
Ruddy Lugo was replaced by Bob Zimmermann to open the sixth, and Zimmermann faltered. Brandon Jones roped a one-out homer down the left field line. Iggy Suarez walked and went to second on J.C. Holt's single up the middle. Matt Tupman lofted a single over the Lyons' head at short to cut the lead to 6-4. Zimmermann got Chavez, but Gilberto Mejia singled to left, scoring Holt as Lancaster closed within one.
Bubbie Buzachero hit Adam Calderone with a pitch to load the bases. Tommy Everidge laced a single up the middle, driving in a pair as the Barnstormers jumped ahead, 7-6.
Durbin couldn't hold it. He walked Pennino with one out in the sixth. Lyons forced Pennino at second, but the Ducks came up with two-out magic again as Binick doubled home Lyons with a blast to left center and scored on Navarrete's liner into center.
Then, just like Wednesday evening, Buzachero stumped the Barnstormers in the seventh and eighth. Ehren Wassermann, also echoing Wednesday, allowed a leadoff single, this time to Everidge, before striking out the side to earn his seventh save.
The Barnstormers head home to face the Camden Riversharks in a three-game series beginning Saturday evening at 6:30. Federico Baez (6-3) will make the start against John Halama (3-3). Fireworks will follow. The game will be aired on Fox Sports Radio, 1490, WLPA and streamed on sportsjuice.com and ibnsports.com.
