Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release

York, PA-A four-run eighth inning propelled the York Revolution to a 5-3 victory over the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs on Saturday night at Sovereign Bank Stadium in front of 6,072 fans.

York struck first in the second inning on an RBI groundout from third baseman Vince Harrison to take a 1-0 lead. Southern Maryland responded in the fourth as first baseman Joe Jiannetti came through with a clutch two-run, two-strike, two-run single to give the Blue Crabs a 2-1 lead.

From there each team's starter settled in as York's Chris Cody and Southern Maryland's Brian Slocum each went seven innings on the night with Cody tying a season- high with nine K's, which also came against the Blue Crabs back on July 16th.

When the bottom of the eight rolled around the Blue Crabs still had a one-run lead. But with one out the Revolution loaded the bases as leftfielder James Shanks hit a slow grounder to third baseman Kody Kirkland who fired home on a fielder's choice attempt. However, catcher Christian Lopez dropped the ball, which allowed right fielder Chris Walker to scored and tie the game at two apiece.

The bases remained loaded as the next hitter, first baseman Chris Nowak, lined a ball into left field that was fielded on a hop by Ben Harrison. The runner at third, second baseman Ramon Castro, got a late break to the plate and was thrown out on a great peg by Harrison to home for out number two.

But just as has been Southern Maryland's luck in the second-half, closer Jim Ed Warden gave up a first-pitch, two-run single to Harrison to give the Revolution the lead for good at 4-2. Shortstop Eric Eymann followed that with a RBI single of his own to make the score 5-2 at the end of eight. All five runs for the Revolution on the evening were unearned.

The Blue Crabs tried to mount a rally in the ninth on an RBI double by Kirkland. But with a runner at second and one out, Revolution closer Michael Nix got Harrison to strike out and Jiannetti to ground out to short to end the ballgame.

Vince Harrison was the offensive hero for the Revolution has he drove in three runs while going 1-4. Walker had three singles in four at-bats, with a run and a stolen base, for York as well.

Southern Maryland could only muster five hits on the night with no one registering more than one.

York reliever Geoff Geary (2-1) got the win after pitching a 1-2-3 eighth. Blue Crabs reliever Jason Waddell (3-7) took the loss despite facing only one hitter in the eighth. His walk to designated hitter Jose Herrera ended up being the winning run in the ballgame. Nix's save was his 11th of the season. Southern Maryland and York will face off in game two of a three-game series on Sunday at 5:00. The Blue Crabs will send righty Eddie Rodriguez (3-4, 4.62 ERA) to the hill against southpaw Shaun Garceau (2-5, 5.91 ERA) for the Revolution. The game can be heard on www.somdbluecrabs.com.
