Winston-Salem Dash News Release

Winston-Salem, NC - Dash starting pitcher Levi Maxwell flirted with another no-hitter in leading Winston-Salem to a 6-1 victory in the nightcap of a doubleheader with Salem on Tuesday night at Wake Forest Baseball Park. The Red Sox edged the Dash by a 3-2 score in game one to earn a split.

Maxwell, who tossed a seven-inning no-hitter against Wilmington in the opener of a doubleheader on June 19, held Salem hitless until Ryan Dent doubled to start the sixth inning. Maxwell (5-14) went six innings and limited Salem to one run on one hit to earn the win. He also struck out a season-high seven.

The Dash offense came to life early in game two with three first-inning runs off Jose Capellan. Greg Paiml reached on a bunt single and Salvador Sanchez followed with a two-run blast. It was his team-leading 16th home run of the year. Later in the frame, Seth Loman made it to third on a three-base error by Capellan and scored when Greene lined a single into left field to give Winston-Salem a 3-0 lead.

Maxwell lost his bid for a second no-hitter this season when Dent led off the sixth inning with a double. The shutout also escaped later in the inning when John Hee registered an RBI ground out to bring Salem within 3-1.

The Dash put the game away with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Brent Morel led off with a double and Loman walked. With a two-strike count, Greene put down a bunt that was fielded by catcher Will Vasquez, whose throw to first sailed into right field. Both runs scored and Greene ended up at third base where he scored from when Jason Rice uncorked a wild pitch.

Capellan (6-4) only lasted three innings and gave up three runs (two earned) on three hits to take the loss.

In game one, the Red Sox opened with a run in the first inning off Jacob Rasner. Che-Hsuan Lin, who finished 4-for-4, led off the game with one of his three doubles and John Hee walked. Anthony Rizzo hit into a fielder's choice that left runners on the corners and Brad Correll lifted an RBI sacrifice to give Salem a 1-0 lead.

The Red Sox added a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning as Anthony Rizzo walked to begin the frame and Correll doubled to put both runners into scoring position. Mike Jones followed with a two-run single to stretch Salem's lead to 3-0.

Winston-Salem finally plated a run against Eammon Portice in the bottom of the sixth inning. Portice, who did not allow a hit until the fifth inning, surrendered a leadoff single to Joe Persichina and a wild pitch advanced him to second. Two outs later, Salvador Sanchez lined a run-scoring single that trimmed the Dash's deficit to 3-1.

Winston-Salem mounted a late threat when they loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh. Portice, who tossed six innings and was lifted after giving up a leadoff walk to initiate the rally. Kyle Fernandes entered and walked Logan Johnson and hit Justin Greene with a pitch to load the bases. Tyler Kuhn hit into a 5-3 double play that scored a run and left Greene on second base with two down. Joe Persichina, who was recently named Carolina League Player of the Week, popped out to shortstop to end the game.

Portice (8-7) was solid as he limited the Dash to two runs on three hits to earn the win. He matched a career-high with nine strikeouts. Fernandes worked out of the jam in the final stanza to collect his second save of the season. Rasner (4-6) worked six innings and allowed three runs on seven hits and suffered the defeat.
