K-Tribe Notes for Tuesday
September 1, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Kinston Indians News Release
Kinston is currently ½ game behind Salem for the final playoff spot in the Carolina League Southern Division. Salem has eight games remaining, but will take care of that with a double header today. The K-Tribe has three games at Frederick then their final four games of the season at Potomac. Salem has four games at Winston-Salem, then two at home against Lynchburg and two on the road against Lynchburg. Myrtle Beach is still technically in the race, 5 games behind Salem. The Pelicans will play three at Wilmington, then host Winston-Salem for the final four games of the regular season. Even though Kinston has a better head-to-head record against Salem this season, if the two are tied for the final playoff spot at the end of the regular season (the tie must be a win percentage tie - would only come into play if there are rainouts this week) there would be a one game playoff on Tuesday, September 8th. This game would be at Salem, because of a wacky who has the better winning percentage on August 26th. Whoever comes out with the final playoff spot, they will begin the Division Playoff Series at Winston-Salem on Wednesday, September 9th. The Division Series is now a best of five format (2-2-1).
.
Hit Men - Winners of four of their last five games, Kinston took two of three from Potomac over the weekend behind strong hitting. The K-Tribe scored 22 runs on 32 hits over the three games including 13 total runs in the first inning over the weekend. Doug Pickens is red hot, going 14-for-28 with five rbi and a home run over the seven game homestand. He has four straight multi-hit games. Ole Sheldon has also caught fire, going 10-28 with 2 homers and 9 RBI and seven runs scored over the homestand. Kinston is hitting .309 as a team in their last five games. Ronald Rivas is hitting .412 over his last four games. Lucas Montero has five straight games with a run scored as does Sheldon.
An August to Remember - Kinston vaulted back into the playoff race with a 19-9 record, the second best in the CL in August. The K-Tribe also had the second best team batting average (.274) and ERA (3.07). Paolo Espino had the best ERA in the CL for the month with a 0.87 mark and was fifth in strikeouts (29), Russell Young was sixth with a 2.25 ERA. Tim Fedroff had the second best batting average in the CL for the month with a .343 average. Doug Pickens was close behind at fourth in the league with a .337 mark. Ole Sheldon was third in the CL with 23 RBI for the month.
