Salem Red Sox News Release
Winston-Salem, NC (September 1, 2009) - A new month began and the race grew even tighter. Salem used a strong performance from Eammon Portice to hold off Winston-Salem 3-2 in the opener before the Dash dominated the nightcap 6-1, splitting a pair on Tuesday night at Wake Forest Baseball Park. With Kinston's 5-1 win over Frederick, the Red Sox and Indians are all square at 31-33 with six games left in the regular season. At 32-32, Winston narrowly sits above the Sox and Tribe.
Che-Hsuan Lin went 4-4 with three doubles in the opening ballgame, scoring on a Brad Correll sac fly in the top of the first to put Salem up 1-0. That, along with a sensational effort from Portice, set the tone to Salem's 3-2 win. Portice did not allow a hit in the first four innings and struck out a season-high nine Dash batters in tossing six-plus innings for the Sox. After the Red Sox added a pair in the top of the sixth on a Mike Jones two-run single, Portice was touched up for one run in the bottom of the sixth, making the score 3-1. After walking the leadoff man in the last of the seventh, Portice gave way to Kyle Fernandes, who wiggled around a walk and a hit-by pitch to save a 3-2 win. Jon Hee initiated an important 5-3 double play with the bases-loaded in a 3-1 game before Fernandes induced a game-ending pop-up to ensure Salem's victory. With the win, the Sox briefly improved to 31-32 and moved into a tie for first with Winston, but the stay was short-lived.
Levi Maxwell duplicated Portice's effort and then some, not allowing a hit until Ryan Dent's double opened the top of the sixth inning. Dent scored a couple of ground balls later, but the Red Sox were down and out early in game two. Winston sent eight men to the plate in the first against starter Jose Capellan. Pitching on just three days rest, Capellan surrendered a two-run homer to Salvador Sanchez before a pair of singles and an error led to a third run, staking the Dash out to a 3-0 edge. Capellan settled down, not allowing a run in either the second or the third before departing in favor of Chad Povich. Povich retired six straight over a couple innings, but the Sox managed little offensively against Maxwell. Jason Rice came on for Salem in the bottom of the sixth and was touched up for three runs on three hits, with one walk and one strikeout. The big play came when Justin Greene's bunt was chucked down the right field line, allowing two runs to score and sending Greene all the way to third. Santo Luis entered in the top of the seventh and preserved the triumph for the Dash.
While Kinston continues their series in Frederick, the scoreboard-watching Sox will resume their rivalry with Winston on Wednesday night. Stephen Fife gets the start for Salem against Miguel Socolovich, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:00.
