Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks took the ice against the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs on Friday night at Independence Events Center. Goaltending and defense dominated the first two periods of action, but the Mudbugs put their offensive puzzle together in the final period, scoring both of their goals in the final 10 minutes of action, winning 2-1 over the Mavericks. The Mavericks return to action next week when the Tulsa Oilers and Wichita Thunder come to Independence Events Center. Both games are at 7:05 p.m.
The Mavericks penalty killing unit continued its success as the Mavericks took multiple penalties in the early goings. Cole Ruwe was called for holding and just over a minute later, Tab Lardner was whistled for hooking. The Mavericks were at a two man disadvantage for 58 seconds. Rob Nolan was tested several times and was equal to the task. Nolan ended up stopping a total of nine shots in the first period. The Mavs got on the board late in the period as Dominic D'Amour ripped a shot from the point that found the back of the net, for his first goal and point as a Maverick. Tab Lardner atoned for his earlier penalty with an assist on the goal. Rookie defenseman Mike Wakita also was credited with a helper on D'Amour's goal.
The second period showcased more defense as each team went without any man advantages. Both teams matched their shot total in the first period with nine a piece, totaling 18 shots for each team. The Mudbugs frustrations reached a boiling point when Mavericks' forward Mike Berry and Bossier-Shreveport's resident enforcer Mitch Love dropped the gloves with just under two minutes to go. Both goaltenders stood tall in net as Nolan stopped all nine Mudbug shots. Mudbug netminder John DeCaro was just as brilliant, stopping nine shots as well.
The third period proved to be the difference in the game, as the Mavericks were halfway through the third period and on their way to a victory until Jeff Kyrzakos knotted the game up with eight and a half minutes to go. Less than three minutes later, the Bugs put the game away for good, when Shawn Limpright buried a pass from Jim Jorgenson to put Bossier-Shreveport in the lead. John DeCaro held the fort at the other end of the ice, stopping all 10 third period shots from Missouri. The shot total in the third was the Mavericks highest in 11 periods.
The Mavericks host another pair of games next weekend, as they take on the Tulsa Oilers on Friday, November 5 and the Wichita Thunder on Saturday, November 6. Both games are at 7:05 p.m. Tickets for all remaining regular season home games are on sale now starting at just $14 per game. Mini-plans, season tickets and group tickets are also available by calling (816) 252-7825 or visit www.MissouriMavericks.com for more information.
