Kansas City Mavericks News Release

LOVELAND, CO - The Missouri Mavericks tied the game with 9.2 seconds remaining in regulation, but ultimately lost in overtime, 3-2, to the Colorado Eagles Saturday night at Budweiser Events Center. Shawn Fensel's goal with nine seconds remaining tied the game and earned the Mavericks' a point in the standings, but Riley Nelson's power play goal in overtime earned the win. Missouri defeated Colorado Friday night in the same fashion, a power play goal in overtime, and the teams will meet again Sunday at 8:05 p.m. CST at Budweiser Events Center.

"That was a great effort to the final buzzer," said Mavericks' Head Coach Scott Hillman. "To score one late and get a point was huge. We had another solid goaltending effort by Robby Nolan, but the thing that killed us was the four glorious scoring chances in the first period that we didn't convert on."

Colorado took an early lead on a power play goal by Joe Grimaldi at the 3:44 mark of the first period. Grimaldi's shot went through a screen and got past Mavericks' goaltender Robby Nolan. Adam Chorneyko and Kyle Peto assisted on the lone goal of the period. Colorado outshot the Mavericks 15-4 and held a 1-0 lead going into the first intermission.

The Mavericks tied the game at the 4:28 mark of the second period on a power play goal of their own. Mike Berry redirected a shot by Cole Ruwe that beat Eagles' goaltender Andrew Penner to tie the game, 1-1. Berry's goal marked his fourth straight game with a goal tying a Mavericks' season-high for consecutive games with a goal.

Colorado quickly regained the lead with a goal just nine seconds after Berry's goal. Dan Sullivan came in along the right wing, used the Mavericks' defender as a screen and snapped his shot over the shoulder of Nolan to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead.

Missouri continued to battle and after over 30 minutes of scoreless hockey, Shawn Fensel tied the game with 9.2 seconds remaining in regulation. Nolan was pulled from the goal in favor of the extra attacker and after an extended period of time in the Eagles zone, the Mavericks converted. Fensel's shot came from the right half-wall through traffic to beat Penner.

Nelson's overtime winner came just 50 seconds into the extra time while Colorado was on the power play. He streaked down the left wing and wristed a shot past Nolan to give the Eagles the victory.

Nolan was strong in net again with 33 saves on 36 shots, and his counterpart, Andrew Penner, turned aside 20 of 22 shots. The Mavericks finished 1-for-4 on the power play, and Colorado was 2-for-6.

The Mavericks and Eagles close out the three-game series Sunday night at Budweiser Events Center at 7:05 p.m. Missouri will end the three-game road trip Tuesday night when they face the Tulsa Oilers at BOK Center. The Mavs return home next weekend for a Friday matchup with the Rapid City Rush and a Saturday game against the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs.
