Mississippi RiverKings News Release
TULSA, OK --- Jack Combs scored the game-winning goal just 45 seconds into overtime, as the Tulsa Oilers defeated the Mississippi RiverKings 4-3 on Saturday night in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Mississippi falls to 22-22-4 for the season and has a four-game winless streak entering their next game Sunday afternoon at home against Wichita.
Mississippi took a 2-0 lead in the first period, thanks to goals from Patrik Levesque and Louis Dumont. Levesque scored the first goal, when his shot from the left side was mishandled by Tulsa goaltender Trevor Cann and the puck trickled between the pads into the net at 3:56 of the first period. The goal was Levesque's 16th goal of the year.
Dumont added an extra attacker goal at 17:06 of the first period when his shot from the slot went in for Dumont's 13th goal of the season.
Tulsa then rallied with a pair of goals in the second period to tie the game at 2-2 after forty minutes of action. Mike Wirll and Gary Steffes scored goals to bring the Oilers back in the game.
The Oilers took the lead in the third period when Wirll scored his second of the night at 12:53, but Jeff Christian answered for the RiverKings with his 13th goal of the year at 13:41 to tie the game and send it into overtime.
Combs would finish the contest with a drive that beat Mississippi goaltender Alexander Pechurskiy for his 28th of the year at 45 seconds of the extra session.
Neither team scored on the power play, as the RiverKings were 0-for-2 and the Oilers went 0-for-3. Mississippi outshot the Oilers 37-33 with Pechurskiy (11-9-1) making 29 saves and Cann (11-5-1) stopping 33.
The RiverKings are home Sunday afternoon for a 3:05 PM clash with the Wichita Thunder at Southaven's DeSoto Civic Center. The fight against cancer is the theme of the day, with special jerseys being worn to be auctioned off after the game, eight players playing at least one shift with pink sticks to also be auctioned off, and R.G. Flath will have his head shaved after the game, if $2,500 is donated toward the cancer fight by Sunday.
