Quad City Mallards News Release
EVANSVILLE, Ind.- The host Evansville IceMen jumped out to a 3-0 first period lead and went on to defeat the Quad City Mallards 5-1 Saturday night. The loss ended the Mallards' seven-game away winning streak.
Mario Larocque triggered Evansville's first period outburst by wristing the opening goal in from the left point at 3:18. At 10:41 of the first, John DiPace whipped the puck into the gaping Mallard net from the side of the cage. Evansville was on the power play when Matt Pierce scored in a goalmouth scramble at 17:29.
Gambling to try to claw back into the game, the Mallards first pulled goaltender David Brown for an extra attacker late in the second period and would repeat the move several times in the third period. The Quad City net was empty and the Flock was on the power play when Zac Pearson scored from the crease at 7:12 of the third period to cut the Evansville lead to 3-1. The IceMen would end Mallard hopes during another Quad City power play later in the third by scoring back-to-back empty net goals. Jeff Nelson stretched the gap to 4-1 at 12:03 and Jamie Lovell provided the final margin just 48 seconds later.
The Mallards return to action on the road tomorrow afternoon against the Dayton Gems. The Flock next takes to the ice at home next Friday evening, February 18 against the Bloomington PrairieThunder and on Saturday night, February 19 against the Fort Wayne Komets. Both of those games will face off at 7:05 p.m. The Mallards will welcome back former Mallard greats for Alumni Weekend presented by WQAD News 8, 97X and The Dispatch and Rock Island Argus on February 18 and 19.
