Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas- The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees (18-24-5) earned a point in their overtime loss to the Texas Brahmas (23-15-5) on Saturday night. The Brahmas netted a trio of power-play strikes on their way to the victory. Jerad Kaufmann made 29 saves in his Killer Bees debut.
The Texas Brahmas scored the first goal of the game at 2:35 of the first with a power-play strike. Wollard has been a continuous thorn in the side for the Bees this season and now has four goals and eight assists in seven games against the Bees.
The Bees would have their first opportunity to tie the game with 11:43 left in the first period after the Brahmas were whistled for bringing Nick Sucharski to the ice on a breakaway. Sucharski was awarded his second penalty shot of the season but was unable to score.
The Bees would tie the game with only 1:35 remaining in the period as Zak McClellan one-timed a rebound for his 17th goal of the season. Bo Cheesman took the initial shot on net that was turned away by Savage. Aaron Lee picked up the secondary assist.
At the end of one period the two teams were tied though the Bees were being out shot by an 11-7 mark.
After Dan Gendur had put a stick on Mike Sgroi as he was alone on a breakaway Sgroi was awarded a penalty shot. Sgroi would try to work blocker side against Kaufmann but Kaufmann was able to get a piece of the puck sending it wide. The penalty shot came with 14:52 to play in the second.
The Killer Bees increased their lead to two goals as Tyler Lehrke scored his seventh goal of the season with a deflection in front of the net. Kyle Radke picked up the puck inside the faceoff circle and slid it towards Lehrke who helped changed its direction past Savage.
Texas would get one goal back before the period would end with their second power-play goal of the game as Greg Hogeboom picked up his 20th goal of the season on a rebound after Kaufmann had made the first save.
The Texas Brahmas would tie the game in the third period with their third power-play goal of the game, the second for Greg Hogeboom. Jerad Kaufmann and the Killer Bees PK turned away a flurry of opportunities before the fourth chance finally found the back the net.
The two teams would remain tied at three for the rest of regulation forcing an overtime. Dominic D'Amour was whistled for a holding call in the extra frame giving the Brahmas a one minute power-play. Though the Brahmas goal came after D'Amour had left the box the Bees defense had yet to reset before Brian Ihnacak scored the game winning goal at the 1:21 mark.
The Bees will finish their road trip against the Allen Americans tomorrow afternoon with an early 2 p.m. start time. The game can be heard on Real Country 102.1-FM KBUC.
