Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville Suns outfielder Matt Juengel has been named the Southern League Player of the Week for June 1-7, announced by the league office on Monday.
Over the past week, Juengel hit .391 (9-for-23) with six extra-base hits, 21 total bases, three doubles, three home runs and seven runs batted in. He also led the league with a .913 slugging percentage and on-base plus slugging percentage of 1.353, and the six extra-base hits and three homers were also best in the Southern League.
Juengel was impressive in Jacksonville's 5-1 win over the Montgomery Biscuits on June 4, where he was 3-for-3 with a homer and two RBI, finishing just a triple shy of the cycle.
After hitting .282 with two homers and 11 RBI in 24 games in May, Juengel is off to a scorching hot start in June, hitting .391 (9-for-23) with three homers and seven RBI in six games.
Juengel had a 24-game stretch without a homer run from April 27 to May 25, but all of that changed on May 27 when playing at the Rickwood Classic against the Birmingham Barons at America's oldest ballpark, Rickwood Field. Since he homered that day, Juengel has five homers, 12 RBI, and is hitting .333 (13-for-39) in his last ten games.
This season, Juengel is hitting .279 and leads the Suns with nine home runs and 30 RBI. Juengel is tied for fourth in the Southern League with his nine homers, and has the fourth-best home run to at-bat ratio, having one home run per 21.11 at-bats.
This is the first season for Juengel at the Double-A level, and he was originally selected by the Miami Marlins in the 24th round of the 2012 draft out of Texas A&M. Juengel is a native of Houston, Texas.
This is the second weekly league honor for a Sun, as Kendry Flores was the Southern League Pitcher of the Week for May 4-10 earlier this season. Also Sean Donatello was previously named the April 2015 BC Powder Relief Pitcher of the Month by the Southern League.
The Suns and Blue Wahoos will square off again on Monday night from Pensacola Bayfront Stadium with a first pitch slated for 7:35 p.m. ET. The Suns will send out righty Austin Brice (2-4, 7.09 ERA) while the Wahoos will counter with right-hander Timothy Adleman (2-5, 1.97 ERA).
Suns fans can also listen to Monday's game on the Suns Baseball Network, 100.3 FM & 600 AM "The Answer" or through www.jaxsuns.com, MiLB.com, or the TuneIn radio app, coverage will start with the Memorial Hospital Suns Pregame Show beginning at 7:20 p.m. ET
The 2015 season of Suns baseball is presented by EverBank, the official banking partner of the Jacksonville Suns. Sponsorships, group outings, and season/individual game tickets are currently available by calling the Suns front office at (904) 358-2846.
