Southern League Names Pitcher and Player of the Week

MARIETTA, GA - The Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs announces its Pitcher and Player of the Week for June 1 through 7. For the second consecutive period, righthander Jake Brigham of the Mississippi Braves was selected as the Pitcher of the Week while Jacksonville Suns outfielder Matt Juengel earned Player of the Week honors.
Coming off his first Southern League Pitcher of the Week award, Mississippi hurler Jake Brigham outdid himself with near perfection in the Braves 3-1 win over Jackson on June 4. Before allowing a leadoff double in the ninth inning, the Winter Garden, Florida native did not permit a Generals batter to reach base safely through his first eight spotless innings. Finishing the contest with 10 strikeouts, Brigham recorded a league-low 0.25 WHIP and batting average against of .040. In his nine-inning, complete game, Brigham faced 26 total batters, just one over the minimum, while tossing 68 of his 96 pitches for strikes. With two Southern League awards, this is his fourth career Pitcher of the Week award after the Northwest League selected him in July of 2007, in addition to South Atlantic League honors on August 16, 2010.
Suns outfielder Matt Juengel turned in an impressive run last week, batting .391 with nine hits, six extra-base hits, 21 total baes, three doubles, three homeruns, and seven RBI. The Houston, Texas native led the league with an incredible .913 slugging percentage and an OPS of 1.353. Furthermore, his six extra-base hits and three longballs were tied for tops in the circuit. His biggest performance of the week came in the Suns 5-1 win over Montgomery on June 4, where the Texas A&M product went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a walk, run, double, homerun and a pair of RBI, finishing just a triple short of the cycle. This is Juengel's first career Player of the Week award after the Marlins selected the former Aggie with their 24th round pick of the 2012 draft.
