Mississippi Braves News Release
Montgomery, AL - Jason Hursh took a hard-luck loss after six strong innings, and the Montgomery Biscuits pulled away for a 6-1 win over the Mississippi Braves on Sunday night at Riverwalk Stadium.
Hursh (2-4) and Biscuits starter Jared Mortensen dueled through five shutout frames before Montgomery (27-29) hit the run column first.
Boog Powell nailed a leadoff single in the sixth, and Johnny Field, Jr. drove him home with a one-out knock for a 1-0 Biscuits lead.
It was the only run Hursh gave up over his six innings, allowing just five hits and striking out three in the Braves (30-25) loss.
Montgomery pulled away in the seventh against reliever Bryton Trepagnier, putting seven straight men on base for five runs in the frame. Trepagnier failed to retire a batter, allowing four hits and two walks.
Tommy Coyle and Hector Guevara singled to lead off the inning, and Juniel Querecuto was hit by a pitch. Trepagnier walked Powell to make it 2-0, and Joey Rickard hit a two-run double to take the lead to 4-0. After Cameron Seitzer walked, Field drove in two more with a double for a 6-0 lead.
For the second time this season, Mortensen (4-3) shut out the Braves over six frames, striking out seven in the winning effort. Mark Sappington pitched two scoreless innings in relief, walking three, and Matt Lollis came on in the ninth and allowed the lone run.
David Rohm hit a two-out double in the ninth off Lollis, and Rio Ruiz drove him home with a single to break the shutout and make it 6-1.
Ruiz finished with two hits and the lone RBI, while Mark Lamm allowed no runs or hits in two shutout frames in relief.
The Braves try to get back into the win column in Monday night's third of five games, with first pitch slated for 7:05 PM CT. Right-hander Victor Mateo (2-2, 2.74) takes the hill against his former club opposite Biscuits right-hander Jaime Schultz (4-3, 3.46).
Listen live beginning at 6:35 PM CT on the flagship home of the Mississippi Braves, 103.9 WYAB, and online at MississippiBraves.com.
