Iowa Cubs News Release

Des Moines, IA - The Chicago Cubs have promoted RHP Marcos Mateo to the Iowa Cubs today. Mateo pitched previously for both Iowa and Chicago in 2010-11. IF Josh Vitters is back on the disabled list, effective July 26, with a strained right hamstring.

Mateo missed all of the 2012 season due to an elbow injury that required "Tommy John" surgery on June 1 last year. Mateo originally injured the elbow on July 4, 2011 with Chicago, but rehabbed without surgery to return to the mound in spring training the following season. He came out of a Cactus League game on March 22, 2012 and didn't pitch again until beginning his current return on June 30 this season in the Arizona Rookie League. He pitched five games at Mesa before going to double-A Tennessee on July 11, and pitched in six games with the Smokies before joining the I-Cubs. He is 2-0 with a 0.63 ERA (ER/14.2IP) with 15 strikeouts combined between the two stops this year. The Cubs acquired Mateo from the Cincinnati Reds for OF Buck Coats on August 30, 2007.

This is Vitters third trip to the D.L. this year. He was also out April 9-29 with a lower back strain and May 26-July 18 with a strained muscle in his right rib cage. He suffered his latest injury running between first and second base an on RBI hit in the left-center field gap on July 25 against New Orleans. Vitters is batting .289 (24-for-83) with three doubles, four home runs, and 11 RBI in 26 games with Iowa this season.

The Cubs wrap up the first leg of their current 12-game road trip with the final game of a four-game series at Oklahoma City tonight at 7:05. LH Brooks Raley (6-7, 4.83) will start for the Cubs against RH Brad Peacock (6-2, 2.88) for the RedHawks. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 and streamed live at iowacubs.com with the pre-game show starting at 6:45.
