Valdespin and Flynn Awarded POTW For Elie Play
Published on July 29, 2013 under Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Today, the league office announced Jordany Valdespin of the Las Vegas 51s and Brian Flynn of the New Orleans Zephyrs as Player and Pitcher of the Week in the Pacific Coast League for the week of July 28th for their outstanding performance.
Valdespin had a productive week at the plate, batting .550 with 11 hits, six walks and a league leading 10 RBI in six games. He also scored seven runs and totaled 19 bases while accumulating five extra-base hits, including three doubles, one triple and a home run. Valdespin's hot bat helped the 51s to a 6-1 record during the week and consequently a two-game lead over Sacramento in the Pacific Southern Division. Since being optioned to Las Vegas by the New York Mets on July 13th, Valdespin has hit .500 with 22 hits, two home runs and 21 RBI in just 11 games with the 51s.
Born in San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic, Valdespin was signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Mets on June 6, 2007. The outfielder was named an Arizona Fall League Rising Star in 2010, and in 2011 was an Eastern League All-Star. In 2012, he made his Major League debut on April 23rd versus the San Francisco Giants. Last season in New York, Valdespin hit .241 with eight homers and 26 RBI in 94 games.
Flynn made two dominant starts last week, earning a no-decision at Iowa and a win at Albuquerque. On Tuesday against the Cubs, the left-hander threw 7 2/3 shutout innings as he struck out nine and allowed just three hits and a walk. He followed with seven innings of shutout ball on Sunday, as he struck out seven Isotopes and only gave up four hits and two walks. Flynn's 14 2/3 innings pitched and 16 strikeouts led the league.
Flynn, born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft out of Wichita State University. On July 23rd, 2012 he was acquired by the Miami Marlins along with pitcher Jacob Turner and outfielder Rob Brantly from the Tigers for pitcher Anibal Sanchez and infielder Omar Infante. Flynn started the 2013 season with Double-A Jacksonville before being promoted to Triple-A. In 18 starts for the Zephyrs he has gone 4-10 with a 3.14 ERA and 105 strikeouts in 106 innings.
