Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA, Neb. - Despite having their four-game winning streak snapped with a 4-2 loss to the last place Nashville Sounds (39-71), the Omaha Storm Chasers (53-57) kept sole possession of first place in the American Conference North with a Memphis Redbirds loss in Round Rock on the night. The Storm Chasers finish their season series with Nashville winning 11 of 16 contests, tied for the most wins since the two teams became division foes in 2005.
Omaha starter Justin Marks gave up only three runs in six innings, but did allow the most walks by a Storm Chasers pitcher this season with six on the night en route to his 11th loss of the season, while Nashville starter Aaron Laffey held the Omaha offense in check over his seven innings of work. In 17 starts for Marks in 2013, he has received three runs or less of support in 11 outings and has the worst support of any Omaha starter at 2.7 runs per game.
Chasers leftfielder Brian Fletcher made his Triple-A debut in the game, and provided all the Omaha scoring with a bases-loaded sac fly in the first inning and a solo homer to lead off the fourth inning. Fletcher has hit 13 home runs in 53 total games this season between Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Omaha while racking up 39 RBI.
Even with the loss in the series finale, the Storm Chasers still match their best record against a division opponent in a home season series at 6-2 against Nashville in 2013 (Omaha was a combined 5-11 against Memphis and Iowa at home this year). Omaha does not have any more divisional games at Werner Park this season, with five games at AutoZone Park against the Memphis Redbirds and four games at Principal Park against the Iowa Cubs remaining in the month of August.
The Storm Chasers now head out on a pivotal eight-game roadtrip against the top two teams in the Pacific Conference, the Tacoma Rainiers and the Salt Lake Bees. In the first game against the Rainiers tomorrow night, right-hander Brian Sanches (7-2, 3.44) will match up with one of the top pitching prospects in all of baseball in Tacoma righty Taijuan Walker (2-0, 2.42). First pitch on 1180 Zone 2 The Duece and www.omahastormchasers.com is set for 9:00 p.m. CDT from Cheney Stadium.
