ROUND ROCK, Tex. - Yangervis Solarte hit a walkoff RBI single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Round Rock Express a 4-3 victory over the Memphis Redbirds on Sunday night at the Dell Diamond.
It was Memphis' 12th last at-bat defeat and second in a row by the hands of Round Rock. The Redbirds fall to one full game in second place behind Omaha in the PCL American Northern Division.
With the bases loaded and one out thanks to a pair of walks sandwiched between a base hit off Victor Marte (2-3), Solarte's fourth hit of the game went through the right side of the drawn-in infield to end the game. Marte escaped a bases loaded jam with no outs in the previous inning.
The bottom the Redbirds lineup occupied by third baseman Jermaine Curtis, shortstop Greg Garcia, and catcher Travis Tartamella went a combined 6-for-13 in a losing effort. Second baseman Kolten Wong tied a franchise record for the second time this season with four walks. He added a single and two stolen bases.
Three straight base hits to open the bottom of the sixth inning gave Round Rock a 1-0 lead, highlighted by Manny Ramirez hitting an RBI single to left.
Memphis tied the contest at 1-1 in the top of the seventh, as Curtis began with a single to right field. Next batter Garcia then hammered an RBI double to left, which was booted by outfielder Chris McGuiness.
Both teams traded a pair of runs in the ninth inning to send the game to extras. With Garcia and Curtis on second and third thanks to two singles and a wild pitch, Chad Huffman knocked a two run-single to give Memphis a brief 3-1 lead.
Round Rock catcher Robinson Chirinos quickly evened the score in the bottom of the frame. With Jared Hoying on first after leading off with a single, Chirinos crushed 3-1 offering for a two-run, game-tying home run to left that landed on top of the home run porch.
In his first start since being optioned by St. Louis, Carlos Martinez struck out seven over five shutout innings for a no-decision. The right-hander allowed three singles and two walks in 75 pitches, 44 for strikes.
Nick Greenwood was charged with three runs on six hits in four innings in relief.
Former Redbird Nate Robertson (4-4) pitched a perfect frame in extras for the win for the Express.
The Redbirds and Express conclude their season series at 7:05 pm CT on Monday night at the Dell Diamond. Right-hander Scott McGregor (4-6, 4.95) takes the mound in the series finale against Round Rock right Scott Richmond (3-4, 5.57).
