
Martinez joins Kernels

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa â Catcher Brett Martinez has been assigned to the Kernels from Provo of the Pioneer (Rookie) League, it was announced Tuesday.
Martinez will join the Kernels today in Fort Wayne, Ind., where the Kernels will play Game 2 of a four-game series against the Wizards.
Martinez was a 24th-round pick of the Anaheim Angels in June 2002 out of Riverside (Calif.) Community College. He signed with the Angels in May 2003. He batted .250 in 46 games at Mesa in the Arizona (Rookie) League in 2003. He returned to Mesa for the 2004 season and batted .235 in 40 games. He was promoted to Provo on Aug. 27 and was 1-for-2 with a double in two games.
The assignment of Martinez to the Kernels brings the roster to 25 players, the Midwest League limit.
