The Clinton LumberKings scratched across a run in the bottom of the tenth inning as they defeated the Swing of the Quad Cities, 3-2, on Tuesday at Alliant Energy Field. After scoring 18 runs over their previous three games, Quad Cities managed only four hits while dropping two games behind Clinton in the Western Division race. With six games to play in the season, the Swing are one game ahead Beloit, Burlington and Peoria in the wild card race.
After Mark Zamojc had a single but was stranded at first in the tenth, Peter Tautor issued a four-pitch walk to start the bottom half. A bunt single followed, and then Justin Hatcher reached on a sacrifice to load the bases when Micah Furtado got to third before a throw to load the bases with nobody out. Brandon Cashman hit a bouncer to first, handcuffing Brock Peterson to bring home the winning run.
The defeat snapped a three-game winning streak for the Swing, and was Clinton's first win in four tries against Quad Cities on the year.
The Swing jumped out to the lead in the top of the second inning, when Brock Peterson led off with a walk. Scott Whitrock followed with a one-out double to right-center, and Mark Zamojc's chopper to second put the Swing on top.
The LumberKings tied it up in the bottom of the fifth inning, when Andrew Wishy blasted a solo homer to left-center. They took the lead in the sixth, as Justin Hatcher's two-out double against Chris Schutt plated Dane Bubela, who had walked.
But the Swing managed tie it up in the top of the seventh inning, when Matt Moses led off with a single to end pitcher Jose Garcia's streak of 14 straight men retired. After a bouncer from Brock Peterson resulted in a throwing error to move Moses to third, Kyle Phillips singled to right to even it up, 2-2.
