Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release

The Battle Creek Yankees scored runs early and late Thursday, cruising past the Dayton Dragons 13-2 in Midwest League action at Fifth Third Field. Jason Jones scattered seven hits in six innings for the win. Eight of the nine Yankee starters had at least one base hit, and eight different players drove in at least one run.

The Yankees scored in the opening inning for the second consecutive game. Erold Andrus delivered a two-run home run after Hector Made walked, and it was 2-0 early. The Dragons scored their only run in the bottom half on an RBI single by Ben Himes that scored Luis Bolivar. Battle Creek took a 4-1 advantage in the third. Andrus singled and took second on an error when John Urick reached on a fielder's choice. Then Matt Carson singled to the load the bases. Jason VanMeetren followed with a sacrifice fly to right-center that scored two runs. Andrus scored easily on the play, and Urick came home after Javon Moran took too much time with the ball in the outfield.

The Yanks broke the game open in the sixth, scoring three times to make it 7-1. Tommy Rojas' RBI groundout plated Carson, and Made's two-run single scored Willie Vasquez and Enrique Cruz. The Yankees sent eight hitters to the plate that inning and nine more batted in the seventh. Vasquez had an RBI double, Nick Walsh walked with the bases loaded, and Made singled to tally another run, and the Yankees had a 10-1 lead. The rout continued in the eighth inning. After VanMeetren was hit by a pitch and Vasquez walked, Luis Robles, who entered the game to replace Rojas, roped an RBI single. Cruz followed with another run-scoring hit to make it 12-1. VanMeetren had another sacrifice fly in the ninth, as Andrus scored his third run of the game for the 13-1 score. Himes had a run-scoring double in the ninth, and the 13-2 score became the final.

Jones (2-1) worked his longest outing as a Battle Creek Yankee. He walked one and struck out six. Heath Castle and Mike Gardner each threw a scoreless inning of relief work, and Paul Thorp allowed a run in the ninth before ending the game. Joe Wilson (0-3) took the loss for the Dragons.
