Lugnuts fall apart in middle innings in loss

COMSTOCK PARK- One night after the Lugnuts dominated the play at Fifth Third Ballpark, the home standing Whitecaps(67-66, 38-26) dealt Lansing(73-61, 35-29) a 6-2 loss.

The Whitecaps took the early lead in the second inning when Vince Blue singled with two outs and scored on Andrew's Graham's double. In the fourth, a one-out triple by Jason Knoedler scored Kody Kirkland, who had struck out earlier in the inning but reached on a passed ball by Jake Fox.

In the fifth, Lansing got on the board on a double by Uriak Marquez and a pair of groundouts to the right side by Anthony Granato and Carlos Rojas, who picked up his 31st RBI. The bottom of the inning lead to another passed ball by Fox as the Whitecaps took advantage on a sacrifice by Danilo Sanchez. West Michigan then plated three runs in the sixth to put the game away on a single by Graham and an RBI hit by Juan Francia. Lansing would add the game's final run on a single by Jake Fox in the eighth.

Walt Nolen made his Lansing debut on Tuesday night, working a scoreless eighth inning, fanning one and walking one.

The Lugnuts continue their four-game series with the West Michigan Whitecaps at Fifth Third Ballpark on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. EST. Probable starters are righthander Carlos Marmol for Lansing against righthander Virgil Vasquez for West Michigan.
