Bees Win Opener In Beloit

Beloit, WI - The Burlington Bees (31-32, 53-80) won their third straight game and their sixth in the last seven games with a 9-1 win over the Beloit Snappers (32-31, 70-63) at Pohlman Field tonight. The win moved the Bees into a tie for fifth with the Peoria Chiefs, one game behind the Snappers, and two back of the Quad Cities for the final playoff spot with seven games to play. The Bees have won now won four straight against Beloit.

Bees' starter Ambiorix Burgos (7-10) allowed two hits and struck out six through six shutout innings for his fourth consecutive win. He is the first Bees' pitcher this season to win four consecutive starts. He is tied with Greg Atencio for the most wins on the staff and tied Adam Harben of the Quad Cities for second in the league with 165 strikeouts. Alexis Encarnacion finished the final three innings and allowed one run on five hits for his fourth save of the season.

The Bees got out quickly against Snappers' starter Simon Beresford (4-3) who hadn't allowed a run to the Bees in nine innings over two appearances this year. Beresford hit Angel Sanchez with the first pitch of the ballgame and after a single by Chris Lubanski and a walk to Kila Kaaihue, the Bees had the bases loaded with one out. Beresford struck out Alan Moye, but Ed Lucas laced a two-run single to right-center to get the Bees on the board. The Bees loaded the bases with two outs again in the third and Kevin Reinking laced a double down the left field line to drive in two more and give the Bees a 4-0 lead. The Bees added one more against Beresford in the fourth. Anibal Figuereo doubled, moved to third on a sacrifice by Sanchez, and scored on a wild pitch.

Tim Dillard pitched 2.2 innings in relief and gave up four more runs (two earned). Kaaihue drew a leadoff walk in the fifth and scored as Lucas reached on a fielder's choice. In the seventh, Reinking drove in another run with a single. A throwing error by Adam Heether at third allowed a second run to score and Dillard hit Brandon Powell with a pitch with the bases loaded to force in the final run. Dan Grybash finished the final 2.1 innings without allowing anymore runs. Sanchez singled in the second to extend his hitting streak to nine games. Moye had a season-high three hits and scored two runs.

The Bees and Snappers continue this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Pohlman Field. RH Carlos Rosa (0-4, 4.05) will start for the Bees against RH Justin Barnes (1-1, 3.52) for Beloit. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
