'Caps End August With 24th Victory

August 31, 2004 - Midwest League (MWL1)
West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

Comstock Park, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps got themselves one game closer to a playoff birth with a 6-2 win over the Lansing Lugnuts Tuesday night completing an August with a team-record 24 wins.

Jordan Tata won his fifth game of the month with a seven inning, eight hit performance. He walked none and had a season best nine strikeouts. Tata allowed just three earned runs in 39 1/3 innings in the month for an ERA of 0.69.

The Whitecaps got on the board in the second inning when Andrew Graham doubled in Vince Blue to make it 1-0. The team used unearned runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to build a 3-1 lead before Graham and Juan Francia each had RBI hits while Nate Doyle pushed one more across on a double-play ground ball in the sixth to make it 6-1. Brian Santo allowed a harmless run in the eighth for Lansing's final run and the 6-2 score which stood as the final.

The playoff picture is becoming more tangible for West Michigan as they need to win just two of their remaining six games to clinch a spot in the Eastern Division. To guarantee a second half division crown, the team needs to win four of those six, no matter what Fort Wayne or Battle Creek accomplish.

The Whitecaps 24-6 mark in August is two games better than the 21-7 record they posted in August of 1998, their last championship season.

The 'Caps will try to carry their hot streak into September with the last two home games of the season against Lansing Wednesday and Thursday night. Danny Zell (3-4, 2.52) will start for the Whitecaps against the Lugnuts Carlos Marmol (14-7, 3.15) on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
