Marlies hand Bears 4-3 shootout loss Saturday

HERSHEY gained a point Saturday night to hold onto sole possession of first place in the East Division race, but dropped a 4-3 shootout decision to the Toronto Marlies at GIANT Center. With Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Norfolk victories Saturday, the BEARS lead the Penguins by one point and the Admirals by two in the tight race for the penthouse suite.
After a scoreless first period, both teams found the gas pedal on the offensive side in the second. Toronto would score first with a goal from John Mitchell just 56 seconds in. With the Marlies up 1-0, the BEARS would rally to take the lead with goals from Chris Bourque and Dave Steckel. Bourque would score at 6:44 to tie before Steckel gave HERSHEY a brief lead by scoring at 12:50 of the second. That lead would last all of 25 seconds, as the Marlies came right back down ice and scored at 13:15. Jamie Sifers picked up his third goal of the season to knot the score at 2-2. The BEARS however, were not done in the second, as Bourque scored his second of the game and 10th of the season at 17:42. The BEARS outshot the Marlies through two periods 23-17, and took a 3-2 lead to the dressing room for their efforts.
Toronto would find a way to take the lead in the third when Erik Westrum scored his 10th goal of the season at 10:12. Neither team would score the rest of regulation or overtime, and the Marlies would win in six rounds of a shootout.
Notes: Owen Fussey skated for the Marlies, the first time he played against HERSHEY since helping the BEARS win the Calder Cup in 2006. The two-goal game by Bourque was his second of the season. He also scored two goals December 10 against the Norfolk Admirals. The shootout loss was HERSHEY'S fourth of the season without a victory.
